There is something very special about surprises … just that little thrill when you find something unexpected. The newly opened restaurant, Cucina Orecchio, is definitely one of those unexpected surprises.
The ambience is soothing and delightful and, immediately, you feel swept away from the busy street and the daily grind. This sets the stage for a lovely dining experience with all the traditional Italian dishes you would expect to find.
Although there are 10 appetizers, soup and several salads available, the Damiano’s meatballs caught our eye. Served in an incredible tomato sauce, the two warm meatballs were paired with two smaller scoops of chilled ricotta cheese, and the combination was perfection. Hot, fragrant, crusty bread served with olive oil and balsamic vinegar rounded out the appetizer portion of the meal. Since all entrees include soup or salad, I ordered the salad, a mix of greens, carrots, cucumbers, onion and tomato accompanied with a light homemade basalmic vinaigrette dressing. My husband chose the pasta e fagioli soup, rich with creamy broth and loaded with beans, vegetables and macaroni. Both were excellent.
Stepping out of his comfort zone (lasagna/spaghetti and meatballs), my husband ordered the chicken capricciosa … another wonderful surprise. The chicken was fried crisp on the outside and moist and juicy on the inside. It was served with chopped ripe tomato, chunks of fresh mozzarella cheese, basil and olive oil. The dish was not only plated beautifully, but was delicious.
With veal, chicken, seafood and 13 pastas on the bill of fare, it was a very difficult choice for me to select an entrée. I was tempted by the orecchiette with sausage and broccoli rabe (definitely in my comfort zone), but I decided to go with my personal favorite and ordered the penne alla vodka. I couldn’t have been happier with my choice. The silky, delicate pink sauce was the perfect complement to my penne pasta. It was sinfully rich and delectable.
Although we were too full for dessert, there is a full menu of choices ranging from the traditional tiramisu and tartufo to lava cake and apple tarts. Make sure you save room to sample something from the sweet side of the menu.
Cucina Orecchio is open seven days a week and is now open for lunch. All luncheon items are served with soup, house salad or a side of pasta and are only $8.95. Chicken and veal parmigiana, marsala, piccata and francese, pastas and sandwiches are available on the daytime menu.
Although owner Mike Orecchio opened his eatery just a month ago, it appears he already has a loyal following. I am sure much of this is due to the talents of his creative chef, Christian Marquez, and his lovely assistant, Alexis. The warmth and enthusiasm expressed by Mike and his staff make the dining experience all the more special. Be sure to give this charming restaurant a try the next time you are out. You will be glad you did. Until we eat again…
