For everyone who loves hot dogs (and who doesn’t?) be sure to make Beach Buns in The Cove Shopping Center your next stop.  This clever new eatery sports a menu with selections to please everyone in the family.

The beach theme at the restaurant is carried throughout this charming spot and you immediately feel at home. Owners and family members, Tina and George (parents) and children – Jeff, Bob and Kim, have been responsible for every detail that has gone into their new establishment.

Kim and Jeff were on duty the night my husband and I stopped by to sample some of their offerings.   After years of experience in the restaurant business in Colorado, Massachusetts and Florida, the family decided to open an uncomplicated family place with good food and great prices. In fact, all prices are tax inclusive so there are no additional charges added to the bill. What you see is what you get!

We were surprised to see how many selections there were on the menu. I went in expecting only hot dogs, but was thrilled to see several different sandwiches and sausages, salads and soups too!

Eight different specialty dogs are offered. The “bare buns” dog allows you to create the perfect hot dog just for you. The Chicago dog, with mustard, onion, neon green relish, tomato, pickle, peppers and celery salt, is an ever-
popular choice. However, the Deerfield dog is really giving the Chicago hot dog a run for the money. Go Deerfield! This sandwich is similar, but offers kraut, banana peppers and red onion to change it up a little. Of course, my all-time favorite is the corn dog and theirs is the best I’ve had anywhere.

We started with the Deerfield dog and the chili dog. Both were great. They may have actually swayed me away from the Chicago dog and that’s a hard thing to do since I love Chicago dogs. The chili served on the chili dog has no beans and is rich and thick with just a hint of heat. We split the slaw dog topped with their house recipe and really enjoyed it too. On our next visit we will have to branch out and try the Pipeline, the Wipe out or any of the other offerings.

Next, they brought out the cheese steak sandwich that can be either beef of chicken. We shared the beef steak smothered with grilled onions, peppers and cheese. This was Kim’s suggestion since it is her favorite on the menu. it was juicy and tender, and the bun was incredibly soft. It melted in your mouth.  The bread is baked locally and brought in fresh every day.

Also available under the sandwich menu is the Italian beef served wet or dry, a Reuben, corned beef, chicken wrap, the combo-Italian beef and Italian sausage topped with hot Giardiniera and the chicken Caesar wrap rolled in a sun-dried flour tortilla. The chicken Caesar wrap was beautifully presented in a bright red tortilla and stuffed full of chicken and Caesar salad. It had just the right amount of dressing and seasoning to be juicy and flavorful. In addition to the already extensive menu,  they also offer the Chicopee, a Polish sausage topped with grilled onions, kraut and yellow mustard – Jeff’s favorite – a bratwurst,  and Pop’s Italian — a mildly spicy Italian sausage sandwich.

Side orders include fries, chips, slaw and a side salad. Bowls of chili with beans are topped with white onions and cheese. They also offer a Caesar and garden salad. Beach Buns uses only Vienna beef products, made from 100 percent red bull beef. It’s hard to believe, but for the calorie conscious, the Chicago dog is only 250 calories (including the bun) and contains only 11 grams of fat.

Sandwich specials are offered weekly and they have introduced a new dessert —the ‘sandie’. This fried dough concoction is sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon and drizzled with icing. It is addictive.

Beach Buns is located in The Cove Shopping Center at 1602 SE 3 Court, (954) 480-2884. They are open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.  If you are looking for a comfortable, casual place to eat with traditionally American food, be sure to stop by Beach Buns. You will not be disappointed. Until we eat again…
