FLIFF & Silver Skies

Posted on 05 October 2016 by LeslieM

By “Cinema” Dave

http://cinemadave.livejournal.com

The 31st Annual Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival (FLIFF) unveiled its poster at Oceans 234 in Deerfield last Wednesday night, Sept. 28. At the poster dedication, President and CEO Gregory Von Hausch announced the premier of over 100 films in 17 days in November.

Besides turning sweet 16, actress Bailee Madison returns to FLIFF with Annabelle Hooper & The Ghosts of Nantucket, Bailee’s debut film as a producer. While most of the films will be screened at the Savor Cinema in Fort Lauderdale (formerly Cinema Paradiso, at 503 SE 6 St., Ft. Lauderdale), Dreamland will open the festival at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino (1 Seminole Way, Hollywood) on Friday, Nov. 4. Directed by Robert Schwartzman, Dreamland features performances by his brother Jason Schwartzman and his mother Talia Shire (known from performances like Rocky and The Godfather), who will be in attendance that evening.

Having earned an Oscar for his portrayal of Bela Lugosi in Tim Burton’s Ed Wood, Martin Landau will accept the FLIFF Lifetime Achievement Award. Along with co-stars Armand Assante and Michael Pare, Landau is expected to attend the screening of The Red Maple Leaf, the official closing night FLIFF film. In addition, Foster Hirsch returns to interview stage and screen legend, Arlene Dahl. These are just a few of the events and films planned for the film festival. Find out more and get tickets at www.fliff.com.

While the stalwart George Hamilton is not expected to attend this year’s festival, his film from last year’s FLiFF opens tomorrow, Silver Skies. This film is an ensemble comedy about seasoned citizens who are facing the foreclosure of their rental community.

Hamilton portrays Phil, an Alzheimer patient who thinks he is Dean Martin sometimes. Phil’s roommate, Nick (Jack McGee) sells programs at the racetrack. Each morning, they share breakfast with Eve (Barbara Bain) and Mickey (Jack Betts) who often gossip about the reclusive Harriet (Mariette Hartley), especially when a young, well dressed, black man visits her apartment three times a week.

While the foreclosure is the serious narrative, Silver Skies features comedic behavior from the main protagonists. There are also neighborhood romances featuring the [hussy] next door, Ethel (Valerie Perrine) and a recent widower, Frank (Alex Rocco), which is actually quite touching.

Not all of Silver Skies works. There is a scene involving sexual assault that is too graphic for the tone of this movie. However, the scene does set up a Bill Clinton/Monica Lewinsky joke that redeems it.

La Mystique dancers showed their moves.

Photos by Rachel Galvin

The Deerfield Chamber of Commerce transformed the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel for their Gatsby-themed gala March 21 — the biggest fundraiser of the year.

Guests dressed to the nines. La Mystique dancers shimmied and shook on the dance floor, posing for pics. A cigarette girl strolled with candy. A long line of auction items were up for silent bid and a live auction was commandeered by Pompano Mayor Lamar Fisher ($25,000 worth of auction items in all).

Honey Bunch Florist, which created the feathered centerpieces, was one of the Big Shots honored, along with Seawood Builders, Bartell Chiropractic, Broward Health, Oceans 234, Bicycle Generation, Awards by Academy and JP Miller & Sons. Key Club students assisted.

Restaurant Reviews

Gimme A Burger

By Jim Lusk
Sept. 5 was my day to eat out at Gimme A Burger at Hillsboro and 12th.  I started with the Mediterranean Burger and decided to make it a combo, which comes with some of the best hand-cut french fries I have ever had. The burger was infused with onions, garlic, parsley, herbs and spices.

Since, I get to write about this, I was allowed to sample anything I wanted. I wanted a taste of their Signature Salad with the chick peas and black olives. There was one problem, though. I didn’t know which of their two dressings was better—the Balsamic or Raspberry vinaigrette; they were both killer. I decided to try an order of their Cinnamon Sugar Puffs. An order includes three round doughy doughnuts covered in cinnamon. They come out warm. I have this recurring dream that I am walking to the restaurant to get more of those Sugar Puffs. I don’t want to wake up. Check this place out. You’ll be back.

Gimme a Burger is located at 1200 E. Hillsboro Blvd., Deerfield Beach, 33441.  Call 954-708-2553 for information. www.gimmeaburger.com.

2 Georges at The Cove

By Carole Kriete
Fabulous dophin dinner last night at 2 George’s at the Cove in Deerfield Beach!  Blackened Mahi and their tasty unique conch fritters- Can’t beat those waterfront views – always makes me feel like I left the mainland and went to the Keys.  Early bird specials before 6pm, Mon thru Fri – and a lobster dinner that would knock your socks off certain days of the week.

Do come and enjoy this piece of paradise sitting in our own backyard! Located in The Cove shopping center, Hillsboro Blvd at the intercoastal.

Bobby Bahia’s Caribbean Grill

By Larry DeVille
Just back from Bobby Bahia’s Carribean Grill at the Hilton … great staff, wonderful food and delightful dining atmosphere. I had the special Salad Nicoise with 8oz of yellow fin tuna pan seared to temperature with baby greens, steamed new … potatoes, hard boiled egg wedges and French green beans tossed with a red wine vinaigrette. It was just right! My table also enjoyed the Lump Crab Cakes served with asparagus, corn succotash and a Dijon buerre blanc sauce and a Chicken Ceasar salad with crisp romaine, garlic herb croutons, parmesan cheese and Ceasar dressing. Everyone left very satisfied…you should have been there with us.

Olympia Flame Diner

By Jim Lusk
I could tell you more than a hundred stories about enjoying lots of food here, I’ve eaten at the Flame at least a hundred times in the last 5 years. Anybody who knows has too. When I walked in Monday night Cindy the fearless Hall was sitting at a booth, so I joined her. I was looking at this giant plate of food and salad, so I asked her what she was eatin’? She said it’s the “Greek combo”, which includes a mini Greek salad and a half order of Moussaka, (baked layers of ground beef, potatoes, and eggplant). Pastitsio, (baked layers of ground beef and macaroni). And finally a sampling of spinach pie.

Cindy whispered to me, “somebody should call the guy from that Diners, Drive Ins and Dives show and get him down here to try this spinach pie. It’s yummy, yummy, yummy!”

I am a creature of habit and seem to eat the same items over the years but tonight I was going to go all in and try something new. So I said to the waitress, “I want Hungarian Goulash!” I thought she was going to keel over, she said, “What no liver tonight?” In a few minutes she brought out a giant plate full of goulash with egg noodles which were falling off the plate and I’m not ashamed to say I ate every bit of it. No BS – I really liked it. Patty, the owner has tried to give me a piece of the killer chocolate cake a dozen times, but I always feel guilty and say, “maybe next time.” Tonight she wasn’t there so I shamelessly asked, “could I have a piece of the killer cake and a cup of coffee?” Man, was it rich, but really killer. Now I know why she calls it “killer chocolate cake”. What a way to end a Monday type of Monday.

If you haven’t tried the Olympia Flame Diner here on Federal and N.E. 2nd, your missing out, big time.

JB’s on the Beach

By Dave Mirantz
This is Deerfield Beach’s Deerfield Beach. It’s hard to improve upon Mother Nature but the folk’s at JB’s have come as close as you can. The live music at Happy Hour, the pleasant non-scripted customer service topped off by one of their signature meals (Janet’s Lobster and Shrimp Salad) is just about as good as it gets. “I always feel better supporting a locally owned establishment. Janet and Jack Boyle’s JB’s on the Beach uniquely is theirs and Deerfield Beach’s”

Patio Bar & Grill

By Gordon Vatch
Tonite was Dining N’ Deerfield and the restaurant was the Patio Bar & Grill at the Wyndham Hotel. Our server was Susan and she was fabulous.

My guest and I started off with a cocktail and iced tea and enjoyed the appetizer of Shrimp & Crab Flat Bread, while enjoying the ocean breeze, watching the wind surfers. For our main course I had the Sesame Seared Ahi done to perfection, served over Wasabi mashed potatoes, with assorted vegetabless and a side of citrus ponzu sauce. The Wasabi was nice and hot – jsut the way I like it. My guest enjoyed the Asian Szechuan Ribs, which were the St. Louis Smoked Ribs, drizzled with Szechuan barbecue sauce, served with wasabi mashed potatoes & topped with onion crisps I stole one of them – delicious). For desert we shared a White Chocolate Truffle, made with white chocolate ice cream, amaretto fudge center, covered in white chocolate.

All in all, a fabulous evening. I hope you all get a chance to dine there this week to take advantage of the 10% discount.

Marlee’s Diner

By Larry DeVille
The Dining N’ Deerfield restaurant on Saturday, September 15th was Marlee’s Diner. It was a great afternoon for me because in addition to the Dining N’ Deerfield event they also had a Classic Car Show going on. Lots of 1960’sera cars, a bake sale for charity and good food. I spent the afternoon taking all of that in.

Agave Mexican Fusion

By John Esposito
Eight people joined me for dinner and the opinion across the board was “amazing food”. The big news is that Agave will have a full bar soon!

Antonio’s Ristorante

By Jim Lusk
A special area was reserved for us. We had 9 people join us for dinner including the Mayor and Elvis from the Legends. We enjoyed many different, delicious entrees. I must say, everyone had something in common, the excellent garlic rolls served with our meals … if you know what I mean.

Café Med by Bice

By Gordon Vatch
I had the honor of being the Host for Dining N’ Deerfield at Cafe Med. What a beautiful evening. My guest and I enjoyed the ocean breeze at Deerfield’s beautiful beach. The Assistant General, Manager Prescott, was very informative and recommended items on the vast menu. For our Antipasti we enjoyed the Spedini Romana – which is Fried mozzarella over anchovies, capers and creamy tomato sauce which was accompanied by a wonderful homemade bread. For our main course, my guest enjoyed the Spaghetti Alle Vongole, spaghetti with clams (sweet and delicious) in a white wine and garlic sauce. I decided on the Veal Ravioli Alla Massala, homemade ravioli filled with veal, in a demi-glace with a touch of cream. This was the first time that I had tasted raviolli with veal. And for desert (who had room) we had a trio of ice cream.

The Chef Tulio, came out after our dinner to make sure that we had enjoyed our meal and welcomed us to the restaurant. Diego and Prescott, many thanks for being a part of our Chamber and Dining N’ Deefield!

If you want to enjoy a wonderful meal, this has to be your next destination.

Baja Café

By Larry DeVille
My family met Jim Lusk at Baja Cafe for Dining N’ Deerfield this evening. We are so stuffed…Our server was Sara and she was great, attentive and quick! Joe Alero sent us BBQ rib appetizers. Mmmmm, they were incredibly tender and the sauce was excellent. Jim had steak tacos and by the way he devoured them I’d say they were pretty good. We had Pollo Asada, strips of chicken breast sautéed to perfection in Baja salsa, onions, Mexican spices , red and green bell peppers, burgundy wine butter and rolled into a large flour tortilla then baked with a blend of Monterrey Jack and Cheddar cheese. Jenna filled up on half of it and insisted we take the rest home. Barbara had Baja’s delicious white meat pullede cihicken sautéed with onions, Black Beans and Mexican spices then sour cream was stirred in and then it was wrapped in a tortillla with Jack and Cheddar cheese. I had the VooDoo Chicken which is boneless strips of chicken blackened with Mexican spices, sautéed fajita vegetables sprinkled lightly with cheese and topped with pico de qallo.

Brooks Restuarant

By Jim Lusk
The final restaurant ending the Dinning n Deerfield this year was Brooks on Sunday, Sept 30. We saved the best for last. They have just introduced this year’s menu for the season. 3 Course Dinner Specials starting at $24 are now available. I picked one to try and it was a wonderful experience. For my appetizer I selected the chopped Caesar salad that included fresh crotons, parmesan and prosciutto with their homemade dressing that is superb.

My entrée was sautéed Key Largo Snapper. It was cooked just right and came with lemon, capers and a jalapeno and cheddar polenta. I have loved snapper since childhood and have had snapper from all around the country. This was one of the best I have ever had.

Dessert was Lisa’s Mocha Brownie Parfait – a moist brownie covered with chocolate mousse and served with dulce de leche ice cream.

All of this for $39 as part of the 3 Course Dinner Special. What a deal for a first-class experience right here in Deerfield. Completely renovated this year, the place is remarkable. Brooks website: www.brooks-restaurant.com
