Parakeet killed in Pompano home fire

Pompano Beach Fire Rescue responded to an apartment fire at 9:40 a.m. Wednesday morning, May 30 at 2275 NE 9 St.  A neighbor reported smoke coming from the apartment. No one was home at the time of the fire. Pompano Beach Fire-Rescue evacuated the small apartment complex, extinguished the blaze and discovered the family pet parakeet “Limey” dead in the living room.

The apartment is a total loss. The Red Cross is assisting the mother and her two kids, ages 13 and 6, with temporary housing.

Pompano Beach Fire-Rescue is investigating the cause of the fire.
