6th Annual Fall Festival–Deerfield, Oct. 24

The fall festivities will be a little different this year due to COVID-19. Deerfield is still holding its Fall Festival, on Oct. 24 from 4 to 9 p.m. at Hillsboro Park, 4111 NW 6th St., but this year it will be a drive-in event! Dress up your car or truck and head on over. You may even win a prize. There will be a live DJ and some “truck or treating” with BSO. There is even a drive-in story time at 5:30 p.m. with Pumpkin Patty. Of course, there is also a drive-in movie at 7 p.m. Residents are free for these events (bring proof of residency), non-residents pay a small fee. To register, visit FALL FESTIVAL

Special Commission Meeting in Deerfield–Oct. 8

Deerfield City Commission meeting will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. in the City Commission Chambers located at the City Hall Complex, 150 NE 2 Ave. A quorum of the City Commission will be physically present at the meeting and the City will be utilizing communications media technology with most City staff participating through video conferencing.

Salvation Army Accepting Recipients for Holiday Angel Tree Program

Are you a family in need or know of a parent that has fallen on hard times? The Salvation Army of Broward County is now accepting online family applications for participation in its Angel Tree Program, the nonprofit organization’s signature holiday initiative that provides gifts to underserved children ages 10 and under. Deadline is Oct. 18.

Financially challenged parents looking to brighten their children’s holidays may visit The Salvation Army of Broward County’s website at www.salvationarmyflorida.org/fortlauderdale through October 18 (or until capacity is met).

Registrants should have the following documentation ready for upload:

Parent/Guardian ID (must show Broward County address)
Proof of income (paystubs, unemployment letter, food stamps letter, etc.)
Child’s birth certificate with parents name, footprints (from hospital for children under a year), or vaccination records showing parent’s(s’) and child’s name
If you have legal custody of the child, please upload the court documentation showing approved legal guardianship.

Families who meet the guidelines for assistance will be notified regarding program participation acceptance. Their children’s holiday gift wishes will be become “angel” ornament tags that decorate several holiday trees strategically located throughout Broward County, as well as listed on a special virtual Angel Tree Broward online registry. Donors fulfill these requests and deliver them back to Angel Tree locations or have them shipped directly to The Salvation Army’s facility. Gifts purchased are sorted and organized by volunteers and then prepared for Toy Shop distribution in December.

Last year, more than 3,500 gifts and holiday cheer were delivered to 1,243 underserved families – just in time for Christmas. The Salvation Army of Broward County works with several other agencies in our community to identify and qualify those families who need the most help.

The Angel Tree Program is only part of the nonprofit organization’s holiday efforts to help those less fortunate. It also raises critical funds for feeding, shelter and social service programs for area residents through its traditional Red Kettle Bell Ringers and other initiatives. It has been instrumental in feeding and assisting thousands of residents, those experiencing homelessness and other impoverished individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic through its weekly Food Pantry and meals-to-go services.

Schools to open ahead of schedule

Broward County Schools will be reopening starting on Oct. 9. The first group to be back that day will be Pre-K, Kindergarteners, 1st, 2nd grade. On Oct. 13, 3rd through 6th and 9th will return. On Oct. 15, 7th, 8th, 10th, 11th and 12th will return. It seems many will opt to stay at home, and that includes teachers who do not want to return to the classroom.

Broward Clarifies Restriction changes

Today, Oct. 1, Broward County issued a clarifying Emergency Order 20-27, effective October 2 at 12:01 a.m., which clarifies requirements for

establishments that serve food and/or alcohol:

•On-premise consumption of food and alcohol must end at 11 p.m.

•Establishments licensed to serve food may operate at up to 100% of indoor

capacity if a distance of six feet is maintained between tables, and no more

than six people sit at a table. Should an establishment not be able to meet

the minimum 50% capacity requirement (as set forth

by the Governor’s Executive Order), an establishment may, to reach the 50% capacity level, allow patrons to stand at an assigned table or in an assigned area, and must comply with social distancing requirements to the maximum extent possible.

•Establishments that only serve alcohol (that are not licensed to serve food)

must operate at no more than 50% of the establishment’s indoor capacity.

•Total combined occupancy of indoor and outdoor areas shall not exceed

existing total maximum occupancy.

Emergency Order 20-27 also:

•Allows individuals at fitness centers and gyms to remove facial coverings

while working out, but requires they be worn by individuals at all times whennot engaged in physical activity, such as while moving between machinesand around the establishment.

•Allows playgrounds and exercise equipment to reopen, so long as

the managing entity takes responsibility for regular cleaning and sanitizing of the equipment.

•Permits hot tubs to open in homeowner association (HOA) communities, but operations are subject to more stringent rules that may be imposed by the HOA.

A comprehensive new Emergency Order from Broward County will be issued in the near future, which will realign guidelines and restrictions for various businesses with the Governor’s latest Executive Order.

“Broward County cannot abandon compliance to proven practices that are reducing our numbers and increasing the overall health of our community,” said Broward Mayor Dale V.C. Holness. “The Governor’s Order has accelerated Broward County’s recovery plan, but we are confident we can successfully operate in the ‘new normal’ if we don’t let down our

guard.”

“Local protective measures have helped contain the virus,” added Henry. “The Governor’s Order compels us to reopen all businesses and pre-empts our ability to effectively limit capacity for certain establishments. However, while we will be retooling local guidelines to ensure they are in line with the Governor’s mandate, we have not eliminated restrictions that require sanitization, social distancing and the wearing of facial coverings.”
