BCPS approves spring plan

Posted on 31 December 2020 by JLusk

The Florida Department of Education has approved Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) Spring 2021 Education Plan that will be implemented at the start of the second semester on Monday, Jan. 11, 2021.

Under the approved plan, the district will continue to offer in-person, full-time instruction at all campuses five days a week. Required wearing of masks and extensive COVID-19 cleaning and sanitizing protocols are in place to maximize student and teacher safety. Data from contact tracing and consultation with public health experts have shown that these measures have been effective in limiting the spread of the virus in schools.

Parents and guardians can choose in-person learning at school or virtual learning at-home (eLearning). Child(ren) participating in virtual learning at-home who are not making adequate academic progress will be encouraged to return to the classroom so they can engage directly with teachers for a traditional learning experience.  Parents and guardians of students who are not making adequate academic progress, and who choose not to return their child or children to on-campus learning, will be required to submit a written acknowledgment of the recommendation and their decision to decline.

Starting in January, the district will provide additional academic support to close achievement gaps – including extra instructional time outside of school, targeted outreach to specific students who need assistance in reading and mathematics, and support for students who are transitioning from eLearning back to the classroom.

The district will continue to locate vulnerable students, including those experiencing homelessness, who have had limited or no contact with their school and will focus on reengaging them in school to continue their education. Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) and kindergarten eligible students will also be identified and engaged through an educational outreach campaign.

Support for teachers and school leaders will include ongoing professional development opportunities, teacher assistance to help support students both at home and in school, and enhanced technology with professional development provided for teachers throughout the year. The recently purchased Poly Studio Video Bars with built in cameras and microphones delivers a new technology tool for teachers and improved experience for students.

The complete BCPS Spring 2021 Education Plan is available at www.browardschools.com/Spring2021EdPlan

Additional Semester 2 information for parents and guardians will be distributed on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2021.

Don’t drink and drive on New Year’s, BSO sets up checkpoints, no Tow To Go

Posted on 31 December 2020 by JLusk

By Rachel Galvin

NY Eve is a festive time but this year a lot more people will be staying close to home due to the pandemic. And, remember Broward County has a 1 a.m. curfew this night. But, in case, you are going to be out and about, make sure that if you drink, don’t drive. The popular Tow To Go program that picked up people who were too drunk to drive is suspended this year and the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) is going to be watching. Bottom line: Don’t drink and drive.

BSO’s D.U.I. Task Force will be conducting a high visibility saturation and enforcement operation throughout Broward County from 5 p.m. on Dec. 31 until 5 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2021. They said that the purpose of this operation is to “detect, cite and arrest drivers who are an immediate threat to the safety of the general public, when criminal violations are found.”

Remember drinking and driving can be a deadly combination! Please stay safe this year and have a Happy New Year!

Anyone with information regarding drunk drivers is asked to call Broward County Regional Communications at 954-764-4357. If traveling on one of Broward County’s highways, you may also call *FHP (*347) to contact the Florida Highway Patrol.

Vaccine Registration site has issues, FL Dept. of Health works to fix it

Posted on 31 December 2020 by JLusk

Due to the overwhelming demand for COVID-19 vaccination, the Florida Department of Health in Broward County registration site is experiencing problems. They said that they are working to fix the issues as quickly as possible. They ask that when the website is fixed, if you find that appointments are not available, to check back often as they are increasing the number of vaccination sites for seniors in Broward County in the coming weeks.

“We are sorry that the registration system did not work as we intended and this will be resolved soon. We recognize that our senior community is anxious to receive the vaccine. Please know that this is just the beginning of COVID-19 vaccination opportunities. As the local supply of vaccine increases, DOH-Broward along with our partners, are ready to vaccinate individuals ages 65 and older as well as additional priority groups as they are identified.” said Dr. Paula Thaqi, director of the Florida Department of Health in Broward County.

Vaccinations will be available at no cost, by appointment only, beginning Sunday, Jan. 3, 2021. Appointments for drive-thru vaccination sites can be made at https://browardcovidvaccine.com . Appointments cannot be made by telephone at this time.

Broward Health start sign-ups for vaccinations & quickly reaches capacity

Posted on 30 December 2020 by JLusk

ICU Nurse Roseitta Da Silva, RN, administers the first Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine at Broward Health North to her nursing manager, James McCrae, RN on Dec. 21.

By Rachel Galvin

The excitement for the vaccine is clear on the faces of Broward Health caregivers faces in a photo they took recently as back on Dec. 21 frontline caregivers would be among the first to receive the Pfizer vaccine for COVID-19.

Then, on Dec. 29, they announced that they would begin vaccinating certain other members of the general public (who needed to pre-register): people ages 65 and over, office staff of Broward Health’s credentialed physicians, EMS and non-credentialed community healthcare providers who do not have access to the vaccine, as well as their office staff. In addition, they said that vaccines were available for all Broward Health employees, and credentialed medical staff at Broward Health’s hospitals.

But, now, they have already reached capacity through February. On Dec. 30, they released the following statement: “Due to overwhelming community demand, Broward Health has reached capacity through February 2020 [assuming they mean 2021] for COVID-19 vaccinations. At this time, we are no longer scheduling new appointments. The public is encouraged to follow communications from their local Departments of Health as additional state-run vaccination sites are expected to become available in January. We are proud of the community for recognizing the importance of the vaccine and are continuing to research ways to expand capacity so we can resume scheduling in the coming weeks.”

For more information on the hospital, visit www.browardhealth.org.
