A Q & A session will follow the tour and presentation.

Funding Arts Broward (FAB), leading arts ambassadors in Broward County, will present A Night at the NSU Art Museum, a virtual program, on Monday, April 19, at 5:30 p.m. Hosted by Bonnie Clearwater, FAB member and director and chief curator of NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale, this free “friend”raiser program will feature a tour of the museum’s newest exhibit, “The World of Anna Sui.” The presentation will also introduce “Eric N. Mack: Lemme Walk Across the Room” and “Iké Udé: Select Portraits,” two other exhibits on display. A Q & A session will follow the tour and presentation.

Dedicated to supporting, sustaining and enriching the arts in our community, FAB creates captivating programming, entertainment and events for its members and the public that spotlights our region’s unique cultural offerings. This is the eighth installment of the FAB Presents virtual pop-up series. Previous programs are available on FAB’s YouTube channel.

“FAB is thrilled to be able to offer this engaging, exclusive and fashionable behind-the-scenes virtual foray into the art of fashion for its current and prospective members,” said Ed Hashek, president of FAB. “The public is invited to join us as we explore the glamorous and eclectic world of Anna Sui, one of New York’s most beloved and accomplished designers, and step inside her imagination.”

Thematically arranged, the exhibition explores Sui’s lifelong engagement with an array of ‘archetypes’ including the rock star, the schoolgirl, the punk, nomads, and surfers — motifs that are featured throughout her work. Hallmark outfits include Sui’s “Silver Peruvian Ensemble” and iconic sequined silk organza  “Babydoll Dress” from Spring 1994. Items on view also include fashions worn by Sui’s personal style icons who include Anita Pallenberg and Jane Holzer.

The range of different styles on display emphasize Anna Sui’s consistent design approach as she incorporates her current passions into every garment. As it celebrates American fashion, the exhibition also provides a fascinating guide to the history of American pop culture, and an inside look into the creative process and unique world view of this iconic designer whose daring and experimental approach to design has become a mainstay of the international fashion scene.

“The World of Anna Sui” is organized by the Fashion and Textile Museum, London and is curated by Dennis Nothdruft.

Shotspotter alert leads to arrests, seizure of guns, ammo–Pompano

Posted on 09 April 2021 by JLusk

For the second time in a week, a ShotSpotter alert proved invaluable in helping Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies make multiple arrests and seize a weapon and ammunition.

At approximately 1:38 a.m. on Thursday, April 8, BSO deputies responded to a ShotSpotter alert of gunfire in the 200 block of Northwest 12th Court in Pompano Beach. ShotSpotter recorded at least three shots being fired. No 911 calls were placed to Broward County Regional Communications advising of the gunfire. Combining superior technology on the ground with critical law enforcement capability in the air, BSO’s Aviation Unit hovered in the sky and saw an individual remove a gun from his waistband and hand it to another man. That man then hid the gun in some bushes.

Deputies on the ground immediately detained several individuals. Other deputies located the gun, which contained more than a dozen rounds in an extended magazine and had the serial number filed off. Spent shell casings were also recovered.

A total of four individuals were arrested. Patrick Horak and Johnson Ducaste are facing charges for possession of an altered firearm. Joshua Washington was arrested on a warrant for armed carjacking, and Dylan Losey was arrested for violating his probation.

No one was reported injured in the gunfire.

Preacher arrested in Deerfield on sex charges

Posted on 05 April 2021 by JLusk

Broward Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit detectives arrested a preacher, identified as Junior Augustin, at his home in Deerfield Beach on Tuesday, March 30 for charges related to sexual battery of a minor.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the victim, a 16 year old female, was staying at Augustin’s home to assist with babysitting his eight children while his wife was in the hospital.

The victim stayed at Augustin’s home during the months of January and February of 2021. In March, the victim returned home and began showing signs of behavior that were suspicious to her mother.

The victim’s mother, suspicious of her daughter’s newly acquired behavior, obtained her cellphone and saw sexually explicit photos and messages expressing their love for each other sent to and from Augustin via Whatsapp and Telegram.

In March, on two occasions, Augustin acknowledged the acts and made a voluntary confession during a meeting that was regularly recorded at a church in unincorporated Central Broward.

On March 30, BSO SVU detectives arrested Augustin on charges of sexual battery on a minor 16 or 17 years of age and sex offense of a victim over 12 and up to 15 years of age.

The investigation is ongoing.
