Deerfield Jackals are waiting!

Dear Editor:

Our elected officials need to watch closely what they say, how they vote, and who they are seen with in public, because the voters may be watching/listening … closer than they think.

Our elected officials need to understand that they REPRESENT the people, and need not always follow the administration’s wishes, nor vote what they want for themselves. I listen to some really dumb things come out of the mouths of supposedly intelligent elected people, who profess to know it ALL.

And when they are talking, they expect voters to believe they’re working in our best interest.

Today’s voters aren’t as naïve as many elected officials may think, and it’ll be proven at the polls next time around, just like the last Mayoral race.

The old saying is, “You can fool some of the people some of the time, but you can’t fool ALL of the people ALL of the time.”

One major problem Deerfield Beach is having is the nonchalant, casual manner the vast majority of our voters take toward our twice-per-month commission meetings at City Hall. Our four commissioners also hold quarterly meetings in their respective districts, and often have fewer than a dozen residents attend. We’ve done nothing to increase attendance at these meetings over the past several years. Only when a major neighborhood issue is being confronted do the voters show up in large numbers.

We desperately need a change here in Deerfield Beach, and you’d best believe that it’s coming soon. The poor attitude/climate found in our current city administration and their ‘deceitful’ ways dictate a change long overdue.

These executives tend to shut out any public input, or distort the facts so badly that the average John Q. Public is frightened away.

How can we be polite and respectful to those kinds of leaders?

We cannot and we will not allow our city to be run by a pack of Jackals feeding in our wallet!

RE: Millage rate, BUDGET

Dear Editor:

I was quoted in your Sept. 5 issue. However, I needed to be quoted in total. [At the Sept. 3 city commission meeting,] I began by stating I do not want people who pay little or no taxes telling me I should pay… Later, I agreed with Mayor Robb that there needs to be cuts in the budget, if I have to pay higher taxes.

CLERGY CORNER: Do you remember – 9/11?

Posted on 12 September 2013 by LeslieM

Do you remember where you were? Do you remember what you were doing? Well, I sure do remember exactly where and when! I was driving to work on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001. I remember because I was a little late to work that day and I was still in the car when the reports starting coming over the radio. I remember because at first I thought it was one of those radio pranks that the radio announcers play from time to time, although I thought this one was a little wild and cruel. I remember thinking it had to be a joke because there is no way this could actually be happening … no way could it be happening to the good old United States of America on our own soil. We need to make sure that we never ever forget what happened that day.

The word “remember” is in the King James version of the Bible 148 times. There are things in the Bible that God wanted us to always remember and never forget. There are things that God thought were important for us to store in our memory banks and never let them leave. God wants us to remember His teachings from the Holy Bible.

2 Peter 3:2

2 I want you to remember what the holy prophets said long ago and what our Lord and Savior commanded through your apostles.

NLT

2 Kings 17:38-39

38 Do not forget the covenant I made with you, and do not worship other gods.

39 You must worship only the Lord your God. He is the one who will rescue you from all your enemies.”

NLT

It has been 12 years now and we need to make sure we remember that we as a united country turned to God in our time of need and He brought us comfort. I remember all the members of Congress standing on the capitol steps and praying to God for help. I remember seeing men and women risk their own lives to try and save those who were in the middle of those disasters with no fear. I remember our enemy trying to scare us and intimidate us on our own soil, in our very own country. I remember a great country and a great people rising up together and turning to God for help. With God’s help (because we asked for it), we rose above what our enemy tried to do to us. I even remember feeling anger when we went to New York City the following year to visit family and being able to see the two holes in the ground that were left.

Please do not ever forget the tragedy that happened that day. Do not forget the lives that were taken in those horrible events. Do not forget the lives that were given by our civil servants. Do not forget that God helped us through that horrible time and allowed us to begin to heal. Remember and pray for those that who lost lives and also for those who gave their lives to help others.

Gimme A Burger

Hungry for a great burger? Have a hankering for a hot dog? Then be sure to stop by Gimme A Burger restaurant at 1200 E. Hillsboro Blvd. in Deerfield Beach. The easy access and ample parking make it a breeze to enjoy this restaurant. The first thing you notice when you enter is the bright white and orange (a nod to Syracuse) decor and how sparkling clean and neat everything is. Owners Yasmin and Serhad Oktay chose the color scheme, designed the interior and the menu and their daughter suggested the hungry wolf logo.

This family business offers more than just burgers. There is something for everyone. Of course the most popular item is the Hungry Wolf Burger, made with your choice of 12 free toppings or, for a small fee, you may select other toppings, such as caramelized onions, bacon, wasabi mayo, Tahini sauce and fried egg, to mention a few.

Gimme A Burger has delicious hand-cut french fries, sweet potato waffle fries and onion rings. I hate to admit it, but we tried all three and they were wonderful. The onion rings were light and crispy with real onion inside. French fries were served with the skin on – my favorite.

The menu offers burgers, hot dogs, chili dogs, chicken, soups, salads, fish and falafel. We decided to break from tradition and started with their soups. My husband chose the chili that was made with just a hint of heat as the spoonful of thick, hearty soup slipped to the back of your throat. I chose their signature cheese burger soup, which was rich and creamy, filled with meat and topped with shredded lettuce and chopped tomatoes. It was not what I was expecting and a wonderful surprise. Both soups are made fresh in-house. We moved to course No.2 and my husband chose the most popular item on the menu: the Hungry Wolf Burger. So much for breaking from tradition! The burger was big, very juicy and full of flavor. All burgers are made from 100 percent certified prime black angus beef.

To shake things up a bit, they offer four other burger types. The Buffalo Burger is made from ground bison meat, the Wow Burger is primeblack angus beef mixed with spicy dried Turkish sausage, the Gobbler is a fresh ground turkey patty served with cranberry mayo and the Mediterranean Burger is fresh ground beef infused with onions, garlic parsley, herbs and spices.

I decided to take Yasmin’s recommendation and ordered her favorite, the ‘Wazzup Grilled Fish Sandwich.’ It was marinated in a blend of special herbs and spices to punch up the flavor of this flakey white fish, topped with lettuce and tomato and finished with a wasabi mayo to add just a little kick to the sandwich.

Also on the menu are hot dogs and chili dogs served on a grilled bun. There are crispy chicken tenders, a ground beef quesadilla, a grilled chicken sandwich and for the vegetarian they offer a ‘red, red vegan’ stuffed pita sandwich and falafel in a pita with tahini sauce.

Their signature salad comes with mixed greens, tomato, cucumber, dried cranberries, walnuts, chick peas and greek olives. Garden salads are also available. Chicken, a burger patty, falafel or grilled fish may be added.

For dessert, try the cinnamon sugar puffs. Add a scoop of ice cream if you wish or order one of their homemade milk shakes.

Gimme a Burger also serves breakfast from 7 to 11a.m. The ‘Cluck and Moo’ sandwich is an egg and cheese muffin served panini style. The ‘Howling Gobbler’ is made with an egg, cheese and turkey sausage. The Timber- Wolf, a sandwich made with a burger, American cheese, hash browns and a fried egg, will keep you full until dinner.

As for me, I’ll be trying the Snow Wolf Bizkitz on my next trip. These fried biscuits are served warm with powdered sugar and a side of cream cheese or mixed berry jam. Could that sound any more delicious?

Indoor and outdoor seating is offered and online ordering will be available soon. Menu available at www.gimmeaburger.com or call 954-708-2553 to place order in advance. Easy access, plenty of parking, great menu choices and friendly service make Gimme A Burger the new place to try. Stop by the next time you are out. Until we eat again..

Bucks blank Northeast, 37-0, in Season Opener

Posted on 05 September 2013 by LeslieM

Pages 09-16By Gary Curreri

If Friday night’s contest was any indication, the third time could be the charm for Deerfield Beach football coach Allen Jackson.

Brandon Powell rushed for 144 yards, caught two passes for 40 yards and scored three touchdowns as host Deerfield Beach blanked Northeast, 37- 0 in the season opener for both teams.

Jackson went 3-6-1 in his first year with the program and failed to make the playoffs. The Bucks went 5-5 last year and fell to state runnerup Cypress Bay, 41-13, in the regional quarterfinal round of the Class 8A state playoffs.

Last year helped a lot for the simple reason that we figured out what we had to do, and the kids bought into the weight room during the offseason, and we’re trying to get the team continuity back together,” Jackson said. “That told them they could play. They were able to do that and we were able to bring the core of the kids back, and I think that worked out well for us.”

Northeast (0-1) looked good on its opening drive as it took the opening kickoff and marched 44 yards to the Bucks’ 22, but lost the ball on downs when quarterback DeAngelo Fulford’s pass was incomplete. From then on, it was all Deerfield Beach.

Powell and Aeron McNeal each scored twice in the first half as the Bucks (1-0) scored on its first three possessions to grab a 21-0 lead.

They are a great 1-2 punch,” said Jackson, whose team will face Blanche Ely this Saturday. “They got over 2,000 yards last year, and we are hoping they could duplicate that this year. We added a quarterback (Danarious Graham) this year and we have some receivers so we will be able to throw the ball a little bit more this year and it will take the pressure off them. The basis of our team is still running the ball.”

Powell, a University of Miami commit, bolted to a 67-yard TD run on the Bucks’ third play from scrimmage to give Deerfield Beach a 6-0 lead. McNeal capped a 5- play, 45-yard drive with a 1- yard plunge and Powell caught the 2-point conversion pass from Graham to make it 14-0.

Powell extended the lead to 21-0 with 10:09 remaining in the first half when he hauled in a 35-yard scoring toss from Graham. The Bucks picked up a safety and McNeal added a 12-yard scoring run to propel the Bucks to a 30-0 halftime cushion. Powell, who finished the game with 15 carries for 104 yards, added a 10-yard TD run in the third to push the lead to 37-0 and force a running clock. McNeal had 12 carries for 79 yards, while Graham threw for 110 yards and added another 40 yards on the ground.

The Bucks defense is led this season by defensive ends Tyler Sayles (FIU commit) and Jason Strowbridge, and a freshman linebacker in Emmit Bruton. Justin Morgan, Artez Levine, Vernon Thompson, James Pierre all have experience in the secondary.

I am very excited about the season,” said Jackson, whose team graduated 15 players from last year’s team, including seven starters. “We set our goals high and the kids know this is it. We have to strive for it. I am realistic, and I know you need a lot of luck. You need a lot of things to go your way. If we stay away from injuries, stay healthy and the ball falls our way, I think wecan do pretty well.”

FLICKS: Tio Papi

Posted on 05 September 2013 by LeslieM

By Dave Montalbano

http://cinemadave.livejournal.com

This Friday, Active Fox Productions will release two motion pictures, 36 Saints and Tio Papi. Both films are the brainchild of Joey Dedio. Last year Dedio’s Tio Papi was an award winner at the 27th Annual Ft. Lauderdale International Film Festival.

Dedio has the title role in Tio Papi, a film he co-wrote with Brian Herskowitz. He plays Ray Ray, a bachelor saddled with his late sister’s six kids, ages preschool through high school. Not equipped to handle such a diverse brood, Ray Ray makes arrangements with a social worker (Kelly Mc- Gillis) to find foster homes for his nieces and nephews. While his housewife skills need improvement, Ray Ray and his family become closer together. Unfortunately, the social worker thinks otherwise and seeks to take the children away from their Tio Papi (translated Uncle Daddy).

Dealing with contemporary issues, Tio Papi is a family drama with humor. A career workaholic, Ray Ray slowly adapts to his new life as a father of six. The kids are cute; but, being kids, the young ones often create mischief for the leading man. There is also love and romance for young adults and older people who should know better.

There are negotiations to bring Tio Papi to Miami as a television series. Given the loss of revenue with the cancellation of The Glades, Magic City, etc., this is welcome news for seasoned production crews in South Florida. With a four-decade career in the motion picture industry that began with ABC Afterschool Specials, Dedio seems to be at the right place at the right time.

We have taken Tio Papi to many festivals and the response has been consistently good. Regardless of upbringing and culture, people are responding to the message of family,” Dedio said.

Tio Papi and 36 Saints seem to be the flip side of the same coin.

I asked Dedio about the diversity of each production.

With 36 Saints, I was fascinated with the uncovered world and the authenticity of myths and Jewish mysticism. I sought opinions from priest and rabbis,” he said.

When I challenged Dedio about the dark nature of 36 Saints, Joey responded with a smile,“In darkness, there is always light. That is what I loved about the character of Tio Papi. Many people had not seen me in that light.”

Hieroglyphics, quills, couriers, Pony Express, Gutenberg’s printer, U.S. Mail, telephone, e-mail, social media and, finally smartphones, texting and who knows what in the next five minutes. Oh, how our ability to remain in contact with each other has evolved. We are currently at what one might call the most sophisticated era of human communication and, yet, our abundance of choices has in a way confounded us with obstacles. Whenever people have so many options, it becomes evident that one size does not fit all and, with people personalizing their preferences, the door is opened for missed connections or over-connections.

I have friends whose sole mode of communication is texting. I rarely text, and, therefore, often forget to check for text messages. This morning, I found one that had an urgency that defied its origin. Why didn’t she CALL me with that message? Because “she” is so totally into text messaging that the possibility of using a telephone had eluded her. I, on the other hand, have so adapted to hourly e-mailing that I lose sight of the fact that some people I know routinely open their emails less frequently even than once a week. So much for the written word.

As for the spoken word, I am somewhat telephone averse. I use it only when I have no other option or when I need to transmit a specific message and over and out. I reserve telephone “visits” for those people outside the geography of visiting availability. I often make a telephone date ahead of time and am prepared to “sit on the phone,” an activity for which I have very little patience except in such cases.

Also, I note that smartphone users have a tendency to react to every signal they get like Pavlov’s dog. They get notified of a text message and – boom! – immediate response. In the middle of a social event when their email signal rings – oops, their eyes focus in like headlights. Granted, some of it is business related, but tell me — puleeze! — how did so many businesses flourish BEFORE they could connect 24/7?

Then there’s Facebook and Twitter and the like, and the competition for more and more “likes” and “friends,” and the inane postings about minute-by-minute activities … good for PhD theses on motivation, addiction and emotional neediness, as well as effectiveness of its marketing component.

OK. So here’s my case. If you call me on my cell when I’m out of the house, I’m not likely to rush to answer you unless we are meeting that day and I anticipate a possible emergency change of plans. Text me, and it’s Russian Roulette as to when I respond. E-mail me when I’m out of the house, and, if I happen to have a very l-o-on- g red light, I may check the message. Yes, you’ll get me on my cell phone if I am out of town, and you’ll surely get the real me on my house phone (unless I’m checking caller I.D. and avoiding you deliberately – ah, but why would I? (If you’re reading this column, I’m loving you) or my home computer, which is your best bet.

What? You don’t want to reach me by any method?

Is that a definite — or can we talk?

2013 Property Tax Rate Increase!

Dear Editor:

Citizens of Deerfield Beach, have you noticed that the city commission wants to raise the city property tax rate by more than one mill? What happened to the promise that the Utility Tax would help to avoid increases in the property tax rate. We’re now back to the pre-utility property tax rate in just one year.

The new mayor even campaigned against the Utility Tax and now she wants both that and a large increase in property taxes. I guess we were fooled again by promises from politicians that seem to vanish once elected. Other surrounding towns (Lighthouse Point and Pompano Beach) have held their rates. Why can’t Deerfield Beach? What can be done?

Attend the hearings and voice your objection.

David Nace

Deerfield Beach

Why are your taxes going up?

Dear Editor:

This budget cannot be considered without touching the conclusions brought about by the Fitch ratings downgrade of our municipal bonds.

[Regarding the merger with BSO fire-rescue], the former commission was sold a bill of goods and voted with the city manager’s endorsement to merge the fire dept. with BSO in 2011. They were told to expect an immediate savings of $1.6 million in addition to long-term savings. The projections were based upon a cursory, one-year cost analysis that was provided by the county. There are not any savings that have been clearly identified to-date.

With the passage of the 10 percent Utility Tax, the commission figured they could lower the millage rate by 1 mill – not knowing that it was creating financial chaos.

Please do not blame this newly-elected commission for the sins of the past.

We are now faced with cleaning up the mess.

Jean M. Robb,

Mayor
