Tea Party and the debt deal

Dear Editor:

Now is not the time for recriminations against Tea Party-backed members of Congress who voted in the end for the debt deal.  This is not the time to start fighting amongst ourselves.  Nothing could make the Left happier than to see a splintering of the Tea Party movement.  We have to agree that, no matter how disappointed we are with the final deal — and I am — that final vote was something on which honest conservatives could disagree.  The President used his bully pulpit to argue that the Tea Party was leading the nation to Armageddon, and the compliant media acted as a thousand megaphones for that line.  It is understandable that some Tea Party conservatives thought this would not help the Tea Party’s standing with the public. There have been good and bad actors on both sides of the debt ceiling debate.  Let’s leave the recriminations to the liberals and stay united and focused on achieving the real spending cuts that Congress promised and electing a President and Congress to support, rather than fight, a balanced budget amendment and other limited government principles. That is what we should be concentrating on, starting today.

Road improvements create jobs

Dear Editor:

Congestion on our roads costs the U.S. an estimated $145 billion annually in wasted time, repairs and operating expenses. That’s an unnecessary burden that our economy is in no shape to carry.

Yet, Washington seems to be toying with short-term transportation plans and cuts to transportation funding. That’s no way to remedy America’s gridlock. Instead, Congress should pass a long-term (at least six years), well-funded surface transportation bill that allows for real road, bridge, rail and transit improvements.

New transportation projects will create thousands of new jobs in and of themselves, but that’s small potatoes compared to how improved transportation and logistics efficiency will boost our overall economic picture.

Our economy can’t grow if cars and trucks can’t go. Tell your Congressman it’s time to get Florida and the nation rolling again!

Change course

Posted on 18 August 2011 by LeslieM

There might be a path you are traveling down in life that seems good, but the reality is that we may be headed for destruction because we are following ourselves (a man) instead of The Man.

I heard a sermon illustration once about a battleship that appeared to be on a collision course with another ship one foggy evening.

The battleship’s captain radioed to the unknown ship, “Advise you change course 20 degrees to avoid collision.”

Someone on a radio replied, “Advise you change course 20 degrees to avoid collision.”

The battleship’s captain was not amused. He radioed, “I am a ship’s captain. Change course 20 degrees now!”

Then came another reply, “I’m a seaman second-class and I advise you to change course 20 degrees now!”

The captain was furious, “This is a battleship! I order you to change course 20 degrees immediately!”

The seaman radioed back, “I am a lighthouse!”

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you just don’t want to budge on your position? Everyone is stubborn from time to time, but people who live a lifestyle of stubbornness are dangerous to their relationships with others and with God. When we are overly stubborn with others, we build walls that prevent relationships from growing – and when those walls are high enough, they actually cause relationships to die. In successful relationships, no one has their own way all of the time. Both in friendships and in family relationships, the one who is never willing to “change course” damages those relationships.

NEHEMIAH 9:29

You warned them to return to your Law, but they became proud and obstinate and disobeyed your commands. They did not follow your regulations, by which people will find life if only they obey. They stubbornly turned their backs on you and refused to listen.

NLT

God has been warning us over and over to listen to his word and not to ignore it. If we continue to ignore Him, we will be living with some things much longer than we would like to and possibly forever. When all is well, stop assuming that you had anything to do with it, you stubborn little goat. Stubbornness in our relationship with God works much the same way as stubbornness with friends and family. Being stubborn with God means that we really don’t want to please the Lord, but we want to “call our own shots” and determine our own course in life. God becomes the little pocket genie, “the magic lamp” we rub and ask for favors when we want something for ourselves. When we are stubborn with God, we push his rightful place in our life aside. Being stubborn with God is sin, plain and simple. When refusing to “change course,” we might well find ourselves, much like the battleship captain, on the verge of disaster. We may get what we want, but getting what we want can actually destroy us.

My challenge for you today, in relationships with people and with God, is that you be willing to give and be willing to “change course” if necessary, in order to build your relationships instead of tearing them down. Have you damaged relationships with people or with God by being stubborn? Will you have the courage to ask them for their forgiveness?

Business owners upset about Lighthouse Point sign ordinance

Posted on 17 August 2011 by LeslieM

Lighthouse Point business owners are heading to city hall next week to protest a recent crackdown on the sign ordinance. Business owners have turned off their open signs rather than pay fees and permits to keep them on in protest of a sign ordinance that is now being enforced in Lighthouse Point.

“Many retail store fronts have a neon “OPEN” sign in their front windows so that customers can know that the location is open for business,” said Pac N Send owner Penni Morris who is upset about being visited by code enforcement over an open sign. “It is an invitation to stop in. We have been issued warnings and violations, and are being required to get a permit for these lighted open signs which include appearing before the community appearance board.  An open sign should not be considered advertising, but rather an essential part of letting the public know we are open for business.”

Morris isn’t the only business owner upset. Graeme Donald at Daily Grind said he turned his sign off in protest of the fees and ordinance.

“This should be changed,” Donald said. “This is a basic requirement, for a business to say you are open.”

Business owners have requested the commission put the item on their agenda at the next meeting on August 23, and Morris is asking that all business owners concerned about the sign ordinance and violations to attend the meeting.

a crane operator at the Dixie Flyover highway construction site was also injured by lightning.

“The crane operator was working a remote-control device that was attached to the crane,” Deerfield Beach Fire-Rescue Chief Chad Brocato said. “The crane was struck by lightning and current traveled down it and struck the operator.”

Brocato said the crane operator suffered burns to his abdomen and right arm.

“He is in stable condition for the most part. Other than having first-degree burns, there was no blistering,” Brocato said. The unidentified man was taken to North Broward Medical Center for treatment.

Two Broward School Board members resign

Posted on 12 August 2011 by JLusk

Jennifer Gottlieb (At-Large)

First, on Aug. 11, School Board member Dave Thomas of Coral Springs says he is resigning. Now, one day later, it has been confirmed by the School Board that Jennifer Gottlieb (At Large) is also resigning, effective today.

While Thomas’ resignation letter has been officially released to the press, Gottlieb’s has not at this time. Thomas said his decision to leave “is prompted by a recent family medical situation…”

Gottlieb, who went through the Broward School system herself and graduated from Nova High School, was originally elected to the board in 2006.

Any person who leaves the School Board will have to be replaced and that decision will remain in the hands of Governor Rick Scott.
