Sergeant spots suspect in Pompano homicide

Posted on 21 August 2020 by JLusk

A Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) homicide sergeant spotted a suspect who fled after he shot and killed a homeless man in Pompano Beach last week.

Through video surveillance and witnesses, homicide detectives were able to identify the suspect as Ruddy Germain. On Wednesday, Aug. 19, shortly after 7 p.m., Homicide Sergeant Kevin Forsberg was conducting surveillance in the 400 block of NE 22 Avenue in Pompano Beach when he observed Germain walking and took him into custody.

At approximately 9:38 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 11, Broward County Regional Communications received a call in reference to a shooting between the Burger King and 7-Eleven on North Federal Highway in Pompano Beach. A subsequent call was received at approximately 9:41 p.m. in reference to the shooting at 14 N. Federal Highway.

BSO deputies responded, and upon their arrival, they located a victim, identified as Joseph Surace, suffering from a gunshot. Pompano Beach Fire Rescue responded and transported Surace to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Further investigation revealed that Surace and Germain knew each other and were involved in a verbal altercation, which led to the shooting.

Germain faces one count of second degree murder.

Suspect wanted for attempted murder found

Marquel Mathis

Update: The suspect who fired a gun at a detective in Pompano Beach is now in custody.

Late Monday night, the suspect wanted by Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives, Marquel Mathis, turned himself into law enforcement a week after the shooting. He was taken into custody at the Broward County Main Jail without incident.

Mathis was under an ongoing investigation for felony narcotics charges. On Tuesday, August 18, detectives were conducting surveillance when Mathis exited the residence and noticed them. One of the detectives identified himself as a law enforcement officer to Mathis. That’s when, investigators say, Mathis took a handgun from his waistband and fired a shot toward the detective, striking a wall adjacent to where he was standing.

Mathis then went back inside the apartment and, a short time, later fled on foot. Deputies with the Pompano Beach district, K-9, SWAT and Aviation responded to the scene.

No deputies were injured, and no other injuries were reported. A firearm was recovered on scene. Mathis is charged with attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer with a firearm.

Broward County business modifications

Posted on 21 August 2020 by JLusk

As the number of COVID-19 cases in Broward slowly begins to decline, the County has issued Emergency Order 20-24, effective immediately, which modifies some business restrictions. These modifications, however, they note could be rescinded if the numbers begin to rise again, so please follow precautions for social distancing and mask wearing… and no more than 10 per gathering!

Here are some of the changes:

  • Restaurants can now serve customers on-premises until 11 p.m., extending closing hours by one hour. Billiard tables and similar games must remain closed.

  • The sale of off-site (to-go) alcohol by restaurants and food establishments is prohibited between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. Take-out and delivery of food is still permitted during that time. Open containers of alcohol are prohibited between at that time as well in all areas open to the general public.

  • Bars, pubs, breweries, billiard halls and clubs, and cocktail lounges which derive more than 50% of gross revenue from the sale of alcoholic beverages must remain closed.

“We are working hard to bring the positivity rate down in Broward County so that schools, businesses and the economy can reopen safely,” said County Administrator Bertha Henry, “but we can’t do it alone. Everyone must do their part to help bring the numbers down during this public health, economic and social crisis.”

BR Historical Society’s Annual Walk of Recognition Event seeks nominees

Posted on 18 August 2020 by JLusk

Nominate an Outstanding Community Leader for the Boca Raton Historical Society’s 24th Annual Walk of Recognition Event on Nov. 4, 2020

The Boca Raton Historical Society & Museum is seeking nominations of outstanding individuals for their upcoming annual Walk of Recognition awards ceremony.  Now in its 24th year, the Walk of Recognition ceremony will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 4 at 6 p.m.

This year’s induction event, which will adhere to CDC guidelines and include social distancing and face masks, due to the coronavirus, will recognize individuals who have served in the interest of the community, and have enriched the lives of the citizens of Boca Raton.  The Walk of Recognition event’s Presenting Sponsors are Marta and Jim Batmasian; the Committee Co-Chairs are Marta Batmasian and Joyce DeVita; and the Committee Members are Denise Alman and Ann Schauer.

Instituted in 1997, the Walk of Recognition award has been presented to 99 deserving members and institutions from the community.  Each inductee’s name will be inscribed on a black granite star-shaped plaque on the Walk, or on a plaque on the Wall of Honor (for those who are deceased), which are both set into a commemorative monument–featuring the mission of the program–beneath the Mizner statue in Royal Palm Place in Boca Raton. The plaques are underwritten by Marta Batmasian, as part of her commitment to her community.

BRHS&M Executive Director Mary Csar states, “We look forward to receiving nominations–and learning about special people who are important to Boca Raton–for this year’s upcoming ceremony. The Walk of Recognition is my favorite event because it enables us to honor the outstanding individuals who have built our community. We are proud to recognize people, from all walks of life, who have made a positive impact on the quality of life here.”

Last year’s distinguished WOR inductees were Arthur Adler, Kerry B. Koen, the late George E. Barbar, the late Dr. Merrilee R. Middleton, and Florida Atlantic University.

Residents who would like to nominate an individual, for the 2020 Walk of Recognition, can find the application on the website at www.bocahistory.org.   Nominations should be emailed to office@bocahistory.org or mailed to the Boca Raton Historical Society & Museum, 71 North Federal Highway, Boca Raton, Florida  33432.  All nominations are due by Sept. 18, 2020.

It is important to note that the induction ceremony will be videotaped and made accessible on the BRHS&M website www.bocahistory.org. Furthermore, the 2020 honorees will be celebrated again, at the 2021 WOR ceremony and reception, which will be held at The Addison in Boca Raton. Due to the coronavirus, this year’s WOR will feature a smaller, more intimate ceremony without the traditional large reception, which normally includes dinner-by-the bite, music, and dancing. All past WOR honorees will be invited, to the 2021 celebration, and tickets for members of the community will also be available for next year’s event.

Isaias Moves North

Posted on 02 August 2020 by JLusk

Wind whipping through Deerfield Beach on Saturday and into Sunday morning.

People got their boards and headed into the surf after the storm. Although the water looks calm, it actually was filled with waves due to Isaias.

Although most shelves were full, this shelf where there usually are paper towels was empty on Saturday at Publix in Deerfield on Hillsboro Blvd. & Federal Hwy.

Catching a wave!

Protecting wildlife.

Usually we hear about turtle nests, but this time, they are saving bird nests.

Lifeguards watch the action.

Non-stop traffic headed to the beach.

Families enjoy the beach, amidst the seaweed, after Isaias hits our area.

Photos & Story By Rachel Galvin

There was a little rain and some powerful wind gusts, especially in the wee hours of the morning on Sunday, Aug. 2, but, for the most part, Isaias left the area of Deerfield Beach unscathed. People did not seem too worried as media waivered as to whether the storm was going to just be a Tropical Storm or go up to a Cat. 1. Stores were fairly free from people and shelves were full for the most part. It seems that because people were already stocking up due to COVID-19, they already were more prepared than they may have been. Nevertheless, this storm did seem to sneak up on us, reminding us that, although the season started June 1, hurricane season now has entered its peak, and will continue until November. Luckily, this storm left our area alone and served as a great reminder that we should be prepared because there are already areas of interest out in the water to keep an eye on. In the meantime, those areas north of us still have some time to wait for the storm to reach their shores and we wish them the best as well!
