Deerfield holiday event–Ocean Way is now Night of Lights

Ocean Way Holiday has been renamed and moved to Sullivan Park this year due to COVID-19, and you need to register to attend. This holiday event is called Night of Lights this year. The event is put together by the Deerfield Beach Community Redevelopment Agency and will be held Saturday, Dec. 5 in the Sullivan Park parking lot. Festivities will begin at 5 p.m. and run until 9 p.m.
 
At the event, you can get a photo op with Santa Claus in a Snow Globe, enjoy stilt walkers, carolers, a family holiday show and a lighting ceremony!
 
Social distancing and masks will be enforced.
 
The City of Deerfield Beach Parks and Recreation Department is constantly monitoring the current COVID-19 situation and will be following the recommended CDC & Broward County guidelines. Visit their website to read any event modifications for the 2020 Night of Lights event.

CDBG Transportation Services will add stops on Mondays and Fridays.

Effective Monday, Nov. 30, the City of Deerfield Beach/Department of Active Aging’s CDBG transportation services add stops on Mondays and Fridays. Operating hours 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. 
 
·        CDBG transportation services are for Deerfield Beach residents, 62 years old and older.
 
·      An additional stop at the Deerfield Mall (Powerline Rd. & W. Hillsboro Blvd.) has been added along with Festival Flea Market on Mondays.
·      An additional stop at the Bazaar International Supermarket (202 W. Hillsboro Blvd.) has been added along with the International Fishing Pier & Beach on Fridays.
 
·        CDBG transportation services are provided hourly to and from the Center for Active Aging, the Palms, B’nai B’rith, Praxis, and Highland Gardens to the Festival Flea Market & Deerfield Mall on Mondays, Wal-Mart on Tuesdays, Winn Dixie and Aldi on Wednesdays, Save a Lot and Dollar General on Thursdays, and Deerfield Beach and Pier & Bazaar International Supermarket on Fridays. 
 
They follow CDC guidelines, adhering to sanitation/disinfection procedures, capacity limitations, maintaining social distancing, and requiring the wearing of masks/facial coverings on the buses.

DB Commission Meeting – Dec. 1

The Deerfield Beach City Commission meeting will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. in the City Commission Chambers, located at the City Hall Complex, 150 NE 2 Ave. in Deerfield Beach.

Dist 4 Office Hours–Dec. 5

City of Deerfield offices to close for Thanksgiving

All city facilities in Deerfield Beach, with exception to the Deerfield Beach International Fishing Pier, will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 26 & Friday, Nov. 27 for Thanksgiving. The Aquatic Center will be open holiday hours on Friday, Nov. 27 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
 
Recycling and Solid Waste pick-up will remain on its normal schedule. Residents are encouraged to put on their solid waste containers the night before to ensure collection.

Holiday Light Up– Pompano Beach

Enjoy the Holiday program, including fireworks & show. This is a drive-thru event–pick up free poinsettia and “blessing bag” at the Ali Cultural Arts Center on Saturday, Nov. 21 starting at 10 a.m. (first come, first served). They will put your goodies right in the trunk of your car. Enjoy virtual event starting at 6 p.m. with fireworks, music and more. The mayor will countdown to lighting up creative holiday lights throughout the city. The event will be streamed on the city’s website Channel 78 and on their Facebook page and YouTube channel. Broward County offices, etc. to close for Thanksgiving

Many Broward County offices will be closing for Thanksgiving holiday, but many services are still online. Libraries will be closed, but many parks are open. The airports are open but offices closed. Transit may have a modified schedule. See details for all of these locations and more below. If you are planning on going anywhere over the holiday, it is best to confirm their schedule ahead of time.

The county governmental offices will be closed on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 26-27. For online info., visit www.broward.org/CoronaVirus/Pages/Online-Services.aspx

 The 311 Call Center, including the COVID-19 Hotline and Business Complaint line, will be closed on Thursday and Friday, November 26-27. Residents can still submit requests for service and report a COVID-19 business violation 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, through the website or mobile app, MyBroward.Broward.org.  The closure does not affect the Homeless Helpline, which will remain open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days.

All Broward County Library locations will be closed. Customers can visit Broward.org/Library to search the online catalog, place holds on/renew materials and access free online classes, eBooks, eMagazines, streaming/downloadable movies, TV shows and music.

Most Broward County regional and neighborhood parks, nature centers, and natural areas will be open for limited recreational experiences. Check the COVID-19 Park Updates Web page for the latest openings and closings. The regional parks’ regular weekend and holiday gate fee ($1.50/person, ages 5 and under free) has been temporarily suspended. Restrictions based on CDC guidelines will be in effect and all patrons must carry a facial covering and use it when proper social distancing is not available.

Broward County Transit will operate on a Sunday/holiday schedule on Thanksgiving Day -Thursday, Nov. 26, and return to a modified Saturday schedule on Friday, Nov. 27. Customer Service Representatives will be available to provide trip-planning assistance at 954-357-8400 (TTY 954-357-8302) for fixed and paratransit routes on Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. and from 7 a.m. to 7:45 p.m. on Friday. Customer Service will also be available at the Broward Main Terminal in downtown Fort Lauderdale, located at 101 NW 1st Ave, from 8:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. on Thursday, and 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday. It  will be closed on Thursday at The Northeast Transit Center in Pompano Beach, located at 304 Dr. Martin Luther King Blvd, and will be available from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday. The Aviation Department administrative offices at Broward County’s Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport will be closed. Calls will be answered 24 hours a day for general airport related questions at 954-359-6100. All terminals and airport facilities will operate normally. Calls will be answered 24 hours a day for general airport related questions at 954-336-2973. The airport will operate normally.

Broward County’s Port Everglades administrative offices will be closed; however, the building will remain open during normal business hours for tenants. Port Operations’ marine services will be provided at standard levels without interruption on a 24/7 basis.

In the Broward Municipal Services District, there will be no garbage or recycling collections on Thanksgiving Day, November 26. Collections will resume on Friday, November 27th but only for residents who are regularly scheduled to have their garbage and recycling picked up on that day. Residents of all other Broward municipalities should contact their city or hauler directly for scheduling information.

Additional locations

Broward County’s Animal Care and Adoption Center will be closed, however residents can access many services online. For emergencies only involving animal attacks or bites, injured animals, and situations requesting police assistance, call 911. For non-emergencies, residents can call Animal Care beginning Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at 954-359-1313. For lost and found cats or dogs, call 954-359-1313, ext. 9273. The Office of the Medical Examiner and Trauma Services’ administrative offices will be closed, but all family and professional services are available 24/7. Call 954-357-5200 for information and assistance or visit website.

The Broward Addiction Recovery Center has limited admission hours due to COVID 19 and is not allowing walk-ins at this time. Currently, services are available from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. seven days a week. Appointments are required for all services including detoxification. Call 954-357-4851 to schedule an appointment or 954-357-4880 for general information. Residential services will continue with no visitation. Administration and Outpatient offices will be closed.

The Nancy J. Cotterman Center  will operate and accept referrals for the Crisis Unit and the Child Protection Team on a 24-hour emergency basis. Call 954-357-5778 for emergency intakes. For all other non-intake emergencies, call the 24-hour Helpline at 954-761-7273 (954-761-RAPE) or TTY 954-765-4195. The administrative offices will be closed for the day.

The Broward County Landfill, located at 7101 SW 205 Ave., will be closed on Thursday and Friday, November 26-27. It will be open on Saturday, November 28 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Swearing In: School Board Elects some New Chairs, Board Members

On Tuesday, Nov. 17,  The School Board of Broward County, Florida elected Dr. Rosalind Osgood, District 5, as Chair and Laurie Rich Levinson, District 6, as Vice Chair. The nominations and election took place during the SchoolBoard’s annual Organizational Meeting.

Chair Dr. Osgood has served on the School Board since 2012. She earned master’s and doctorate degrees in Public Administration from Nova Southeastern University. Dr. Osgood is a Broward County native and a Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) graduate of Fort Lauderdale High School.

Vice Chair Levinson was first elected to the School Board in 2010 to represent District 6.  She earned a bachelor’s degree in Economics from Brandeis University. Levinson was born and raised in South Florida. 

Also, on this day, the School Board welcomed two new members during its swearing-in ceremony. 

Debra Hixon was sworn in to represent Countywide At-Large, Seat 9. Hixon began her education career with BCPS as a science teacher at Blanche Ely High School in 1989. She transferred to South Broward High School in 1994, where she most recently served as magnet coordinator for the Maritime/Marine Science & Technology magnet program.  

Sarah Leonardi was sworn in to represent District 3. Leonardi began her education career with BCPS in 2014 at Coconut Creek High School, where she was voted Teacher of the Year in 2016. She is currently an English teacher at Nova High School, where she serves as coordinator for the Literary Fair.  

Re-elected School Board Members Patricia Good, District 2, and Dr. Osgood, were also sworn in during today’s ceremony. Other School Board members currently serving terms include Lori Alhadeff, District 4; Donna P. Korn, Countywide, Seat 8; Ann Murray, District 1; and Nora Rupert, District 7.

BSO investigates fatal shooting in Pompano

Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) homicide detectives are investigating a shooting that left one man dead at a Pompano Beach banquet hall. 
 
Shortly before midnight on Saturday, Nov. 7, BSO deputies responded to a report of a shooting at the Genesis Banquet Hall located at 1437 SW 26 Ave. in Pompano Beach. When deputies arrived, they located an adult male victim who was suffering from a gunshot wound. Pompano Beach Fire Rescue responded. The victim was pronounced deceased on scene. No one else at the event was injured.
 
Preliminary investigation revealed that two individuals inside the banquet hall were involved in an altercation that escalated into the fatal shooting. Crime scene and homicide detectives were notified and are investigating the circumstances behind the incident.

Wondering why City Facilities are closed? It’s Veterans Day

Wondering where everyone is? All Deerfield Beach City facilities, with the exception of the Deerfield Beach International Fishing Pier, are closed on Wednesday, Nov. 11 for Veterans Day. The Aquatic Center will be open holiday hours from until 4:30 p.m. The Pier will be open normal business hours until 11 p.m.
 
Solid Waste pick-up will remain on its normal schedule. 
 
As a reminder, the City’s curbside recycling program is currently suspended. While residents who choose to continue recycling can bring all program recyclable materials to the City’s Recycling Drop-Off Center, please note the drop-off center will also be closed on Wednesday, Nov. 11 as well.
