Bailey Contemporary Arts Center (BaCA) is pleased to present a free visual art exhibit featuring original works by local ArtsUnited members. Artists are challenged to create relevant art using only shades of black, white and grey. Two-and three-dimensional works include photography, painting, pencil, sculpture, metal works and mixed media. The opening reception takes place during Old Town Untapped, Friday, June 3, from 6-10 p.m., and the exhibition runs through August 17. 

“This exhibition is a fascinating and beautiful look inside the visionary minds of artists when they are required to create only in black and white, and gray,” said Phyllis Korab, Cultural Affairs director. “The experiments and explorations of this challenge lead to glorious results!”

ArtsUnited is Florida’s premiere Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) and friends visual and performing arts organization. It is a nonprofit arts organization founded in 1999 in response to a growing need of local LGBTQ artists for an interactive and supportive working environment. The organization focuses on showcasing the art of the LGBTQ community in all genres of the arts, including visual art, music, theatre, film and fashion. Rebounding from COVID-19, The Pap Corps Champions for Cancer Research, located in Deerfield Beach, came back full swing with their fundraising for the 2021/2022 fiscal year. At their May meeting, the 501(c)(3) nonprofit donated $3.5 million to Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, also located in Deerfield.  Almost 300 Pap Corps members, along with leaders from Sylvester, enjoyed a beautiful breakfast at Boca West, where the check was presented to Jayne Sylvester Malfitano on behalf of the center.

“I am so proud of our amazing members,” declared Sally Berenzweig, CEO of The Pap Corps. “Your dedication and passion, especially during these past few years, has been such an inspiration.”

Jayne Sylvester Malfitano, whose parents endowed the center, spoke eloquently about the special partnership between The Pap Corps and Sylvester, and shared several of the numerous scientific advancements that have occurred thanks to research, including the rise of precision medicine, which is an approach to cancer treatment that is targeted at genetic markers in each person’s unique cancer.

Sylvester is the only NCI-Designated Cancer Center in South Florida, and The Pap Corps has donated over $110 million during the past 70 years to support cancer research. To celebrate these seven decades of giving, Robert Weinroth, Mayor of Palm Beach County presented a proclamation honoring the nonprofit’s service.

Other event highlights included recognizing top donors in multiple categories, honoring retiring chapter presidents and welcoming new chapter presidents.

“It is with such joy that we gather today to celebrate our members and honor the unique role our organization plays in advancing lifesaving cancer treatments,” said Susan Dinter, Pap Corps Chair of the Board. “We look forward to creating a world without cancer, but until we achieve that goal, The Pap Corps will be here!”

On Saturday night, May 7, the bon vivants of Boca Raton and beyond flocked to The Boca Raton to indulge in everything the Boca Bacchanal Grand Tasting had to offer. This event, benefitting the Boca Raton Historical Society and The Schmidt Boca Raton History Museum, offered food and wine, as well as a silent auction. Forty-two prized vintners and wineries with wines from all over the world were ready to pour. People could strike a pose to remember the moment at the Alina Residences’ “photo booth.”

Guests could also sample food by the bite from many local eateries, including The Boca Raton, The Capital Grille, Eat District Healthy Asian Bowl, KakaoZon Chocolate, Kapow Noodle Bar, New York Grilled Cheese, The Poké Company, Prezzo, Proper Ice Cream, Ramen Lab Eatery, Rebel House / Alley Cat, Sicilian Oven, Brulé Bistro / Rose’s Daughter, Ganzo Sushi, Meso Beach House and Seagate Hotel.

There also will a silent auction. Tickets are $200.

The Junior League of Boca Raton’s annual fundraiser, Raise the Bar, will be held on Thursday, April 28 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Rocco’s Tacos, 5250 Town Center Circle. The event will celebrate the 16^th anniversary of the Junior League of Boca Raton Endowment Fund, Inc.

Honorary Chairs are Dr. Jacqui Moroco Maloney and Mr. Jack Maloney.

Local celebrity bartenders will include Doug Fash and Forrest Heathcott, Tim Snow and Jerry Fedele, Kimberley Trombly-Burmeister and Barbara James, Jamie Sauer and Reilly Glasser, Kelly Fleming and Melissa Bonaros and Eric Applewhite and Howard Guggenheim.

Funds raised will benefit the Endowment Fund of the Junior League of Boca Raton which supports the Vegso Community Resource Center (VCRC). This vital community resource offers free trainings for our nonprofit community, free access to the grant library and a place for the community to gather and hold meetings without incurring overhead costs.

A FAB event is coming our way! If you are in Broward County and are a lover of the arts, you won’t want to miss this gem of an event. Yearly, Funding Arts Broward holds a special event filled with art and fellowship, music and culinary treats, and more.  This year is sure to be just as special.

To be held Monday, April 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the NSU Art Museum Ft. Lauderdale, the event is slated to include a performance by the Dillard High School Center for the Arts students. This elegant black and white themed cocktail party will also include light bites and a decadent dessert table. The best part about their event is seeing the art on display at the museum. This year, the exhibit is called “Lux et Veritas” and the private tour will be led by Bonnie Clearwater, the director and chief curator at the museum. Make sure to wear your black and white for this elegant affair.

More about the exhibit:

According to the museum, “Lux et Veritas”  focuses on a generation of artists of color who attended Yale School of Art for graduate studies between 2000 and 2010. The exhibition’s title alludes to Yale University’s motto, “Lux et Veritas,” which translates from Latin to “Light and Truth.” In the context of this exhibition, the title references how these artists thought with critical complexity about their work and their movement through institutional structures. Featured artists include Mike Cloud, William Cordova, Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Abigail DeVille, Torkwase Dyson, John Espinosa, Luis Gispert, Rashawn Griffin, Leslie Hewitt, Loren Holland, Titus Kaphar, Jamerry Kim, Eric N. Mack, Wardell Milan, Wangechi Mutu, Mamiko Otsubo, Ronny Qevedo,  Mickalene Thomas, Anna Tsouhlarakis, Shoshanna Weinberger and Kehinde Wiley.

As with similar programs, Yale School of Art, in New Haven, Connecticut, had not been historically diverse, which spurred these art students to form affiliations across the departments of painting, graphic design, sculpture, photography and art history. They filled gaps in the school’s curriculum and counteracted the lack of diversity among the faculty by inviting artists, curators and writers of color as advisors and guest speakers, developing an interdisciplinary forum, publishing art journals, organizing exhibitions and documenting their experiences in video and photography. The relationships they formed at school evolved into communities that networked and provided essential support and feedback for one another, often passing on these efforts beyond graduate study. Their reevaluation of the Western art canon, and commitment to the method and practice of teaching has contributed to a greater recognition of artists of color, challenged stereotypes and enriched the overall shared spaces of learning and thinking about art and the art praxis.

“Lux et Veritas” provides a public forum in which to address the directions these artists took based on the explorations that began in graduate school and were instilled thereafter in their practice. The exhibition is curated by Bonnie Clearwater, director and chief curator, NSU Art Museum. Mike Cloud (Yale, MFA 2003), William Cordova (Yale, MFA 2004), Leslie Hewitt (Yale, MFA 2004) and Irene V. Small, associate professor, Contemporary Art & Criticism, Princeton University (Yale, Ph.D. 2008) are advisors on the exhibition. Oral histories with the artists who attended the School of Art provided significant insight into their experiences, relationships, and work.

The exhibit is currently on display until October 23. It is presented by S. Donald Sussman and sponsored by Funding Arts Broward.

When was the last time you played Monopoly? Now is a chance to try your hand at the real estate game and give back to an important local nonprofit at the same time.

Boca Helping Hands (BHH) will host the 16th Annual Monopoly Event & Casino Night on Saturday, April 30 at 6 p.m. at The Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club, 2425 West Maya Palm Dr. in Boca Raton. 

Besides guests playing the game and trying to become the champion, the evening will also include hors d’oeuvres and dinner, a silent and live auction by auctioneer Neil Saffer, as well as casino gaming and a DJ.

Proceeds from the event will help assist 27,000 people in the South Florida community through BHH’s various programs, including hunger relief, job training, healthcare, emergency financial assistance, childcare and weekend meals for Palm Beach County school children.
