Community Health & Wellness Fair

Posted on 11 September 2021 by JLusk

The Key Club was one of the many groups in attendance.

By Rachel Galvin

On September 11, Zion Lutheran was the site of a Community Health & Wellness Fair. Tents took over the parking lot filled with plenty of health information and other information on everything from children’s services to Hospice care. The Kiwanis Club and their Key Club was there as well. Mayor Bill Ganz and Commissioner Drosky were among those in attendance at the opening ceremony as the event began.

The event was held in memory of Alexis J. Marion, who took her life in February 2020. Her parents, Mari and Michael were at the fair. Mari said that when Alexis was struggling, the city and Broward Sheriff’s Office were there for them, something for which she is very thankful, but she found that certain other mental health organizations and services were not. That is something that they continue to bring up — the need for there to be services available when needed. “When kids need help, show up,” she said. “All kids just want to be heard.” She said they wanted to make sure this never happens to another family.

That is a reason they support Deerfield Beach Community Cares. Executive Director of the group, Joel Smith, said his goal to be at events like this one is to listen to the community and determine what the people’s needs are and how he can match providers with those who need the services. He had people fill out a survey asking what types of programs they would like to see and how they handle situations like stress in their life.

Posted on 26 August 2021 by JLusk

Habitat for Humanity of Broward is one of more than 220 Habitat for Humanity organizations awarded a grant recently from Wells Fargo as part of its nationwide initiative to help families unable to obtain conventional financing to become first-time homeowners.

Wells Fargo’s $15,000 grant to Habitat Broward will help provide the Moreaus, a hard-working family of seven, with a home of their own in A Rick Case Habitat Community in Pompano Beach.

“Far too many people across the country are facing housing instability and one of our key priorities is to create housing affordability solutions where everyone can have a safe and affordable place to call home,” said Wells Fargo South Florida Social Impact and Sustainability Leader Leo Toca. “We are proud to support Habitat for Humanity of Broward in providing homeownership opportunities in South Florida.”

“Wells Fargo understands the economic empowerment that comes with homeownership and is acting on this belief across the nation,” said Nancy Robin, Habitat Broward CEO and executive director. “Families like the Moreaus would not achieve the dream of homeownership without great corporate citizens like Wells Fargo and we can’t thank them enough.”

The grant is part of a $7.75 million donation Wells Fargo is making to Habitat for Humanity International through Wells Fargo Builds, an initiative that provides philanthropic financial support and volunteerism to create sustainable affordable housing. More than 340 homes will be constructed or repaired with Habitat in over 40 states through the initiative this year. Wells Fargo Builds is part of Wells Fargo’s $1 billion philanthropic commitment to create more housing affordability solutions by 2025.

Police Chief Rodney Brimlow to Retire

Posted on 23 July 2021 by JLusk

The City of Deerfield Beach would like to express its thanks and appreciation to BSO Police Captain for the Deerfield Beach District, Rodney Brimlow, who announced he will retire in late August 2021.

Captain Brimlow has become an integral part of the DFB family and has committed to establishing a relationship with the community based on respect and kindness. Captain Brimlow, who also happens to be a Catholic Deacon with Harvard University credentials, has accomplished great things in Deerfield Beach.

During the height of the pandemic, his team worked closely with the City Legislative Affairs team in organizing the bi-weekly food giveaways. He also helped to inform and educate the faith community about important crime trends and crime prevention during his participation in the Mayor’s Quarterly Faith Breakfast. He also implemented the Operational and Tactical Intelligence Center (OTIC) for Deerfield Beach, a model for the County that has been replicated in many other jurisdictions. The list of achievements for Captain Brimlow go on and his skill for organization and mentorship are unmatched.

“I cannot underscore just how much of an asset Captain Brimlow has been for this city. His favorite verse of the Bible is Micah 6:8, “He has told you what is good and what it is the LORD requires of you: to act with justice, to love with mercy, and to walk with humility before God.” This verse perfectly describes Captain Brimlow and how he leads. He is honestly one of the most compassionate and caring leaders I’ve ever had the privilege to work with. This is a huge loss for us, but I wish him incredible success and happiness in his retirement,” said Mayor Bill Ganz.

City Manager David Santucci said, “His contributions go well beyond that of a law enforcement professional. During his time with the City, both as an Executive Officer and District Captain, he has been a beacon for dignity, respect, and inclusiveness for this community. Although it is sad to see him go, he deserves this next chapter in his life and I wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”

Captain Brimlow could not say enough about ending his law enforcement career in Deerfield Beach.

“My time with Deerfield Beach has been one of the most rewarding of my 26 years with the Broward Sheriff’s Office. I love the community, and the city workers that I served alongside are genuinely some of the finest professionals I’ve worked with in my career. I could not be more proud of the men and women in law enforcement whom I have had the privilege to serve alongside. They are good people who love this community – I will definitely miss my team. I am so proud of them, and I genuinely believe in the good that law enforcement can do to transform and aid cities. But after so many years in law enforcement, it is time for me to chase different dreams and goals for myself and my family. I am looking forward to civilian life. Thank you, DFB!”

Captain Brimlow will be dearly missed by his colleagues and the Deerfield Beach community. But this City is better because of him, and we are grateful for his service. Please join the City of Deerfield Beach in wishing the Captain great health, peace, happiness, and much success in his retirement!

Stuffed animals given to children in need

Posted on 06 July 2021 by JLusk

More than 500 stuffed animals were donated to the Broward Sheriff’s Office Pompano Beach District for children who have experienced a traumatic incident.

On Saturday, June 26, the Widows Sons International Masonic Riders Association generously delivered the plush toys to the district office. The toys, teddy bears and stuffed animals will be distributed to deputies to assist in their interaction with children who have gone through a difficult time or experienced emotional or physical crisis.

The hope is that sharing these toys with children will bring them some comfort in a time of need.
