Boca Raton’s Lynn University to host final presidential debate

Posted on 31 October 2011 by JLusk

–By Rachel Galvin —

On Oct. 22, 2012, all eyes will be on Boca Raton. As the presidential campaigns wrap up, the final debate between red and blue will take place at Lynn University. The determination for the location to be Boca Raton over other contenders came down to several considerations, including the importance of the state of Florida as a swing state, the close proximity of the university to major transportation routes and the success of last year’s Congressional debate between Ron Klein and Allen West. The decision to have the debate in Florida was agreed upon across party lines and is seen as a benefit not only for the university, but the surrounding area as well.

According the Lynn University’s website (www.lynn.edu): “A debate would attract an estimated 5,000 to 8,000 people (including several thousand members of the domestic and international media) to the Boca Raton area. These people could stay in the area up to a week, generating a sizable economic impact.”

Trio Busted for Residential Rip-Off, Oct. 5

Posted on 26 October 2011 by LeslieM

Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives have caught three criminals who burglarized two homes Oct. 5 as the homeowners slept in their beds.

Two of the suspects were caught on video concealing their faces and spray painting the lens of a surveillance camera on the patio of a Deerfield Beach home. Then they slipped inside and stole $30,000 dollars in jewelry, electronics, checks, and other property. Detectives believe the teens possibly intended to steal the family Corvette but the dog scared them away before they could take it. Detectives recovered some of the stolen property, but they have yet to find Barbara Rysavy’s wedding ring. Earlier in the night, they crept into a Tamarac woman’s home as she slept, and stole a computer and a 2008 BMW. They drove the car to the Deerfield Beach burglary and later abandoned it.

The burglars, Brianna Anderson, David Nicholas and a 17-year-old suspect have been charged with multiple counts including burglary, grand theft, grand theft auto and criminal mischief. The 17-year-old was also charged with violation of probation. After the burglaries, detectives got a crucial clue when Anderson tried to cash checks stolen from the homeowners. She was charged with two counts of uttering a forged check.

Anyone with additional information about these suspects, the location of the missing wedding ring or the other unsolved burglaries can contact Det. Scott Nida at at (954) 480-4316, Det. Mike Colantuno at (954) 720-2225 or report information anonymously to Crime Stoppers of Broward County at (954) 493-TIPS (8477) or online at www.browardcrimestoppers.org.

On Oct. 2, Dunn’s Run15th Annual Race kicked off from Deerfield Beach and back with thousands of participants, running or walking toward the finish line. Proceeds benefit Boys & Girls Clubs of America. The race has raised about $3 million for the organization through the years. Not only was this early morning (7:30 a.m.) race an opportunity for people to show their competitive spirit and beat their personal best, but also was a way to show support for the community. Many arrived to walk or run with their teams or individually. Some walked with their children or pushed them in strollers while enjoying the sunrise and the beautiful beach view. Congressman Allen West came all the way from Washington D.C. to partake in his tradition of running with the American flag through the streets of Deerfield. Even CRA director Keven Klopp came out to run for the first time this year.

Then there were the competitors, like Brian Dillard, who won the 5k in the men’s division, and Rachel Ginsberg, who won in the female division. The Deerfield Beach High Cross Country team had many runners compete this year and place. Awards were given for various age categories. For more results, visit www.splitsecondtiming.com.

In addition to all the running and walking, there was also much mingling and browsing through vendor booths. Panera bread came out to serve up some good eats and the band Atlas Shrugged performed.
