Dredging equipment on Hillsboro, Deerfield Beach – use caution

Posted on 15 March 2011 by LeslieM

Dredging equipment is now located offshore of Deerfield Beach and is pumping sand as part of a joint beach nourishment project between the City of Deerfield Beach and the Town of Hillsboro Beach.

The project was originally scheduled to begin in early March, but was delayed due to inclement weather. Because of this delay, the project plan has been modified so that work in Hillsboro Beach will be completed prior to moving back north into Deerfield Beach.

Work in Hillsboro Beach began this past weekend and is expected to take several weeks.

Once the Hillsboro portion is complete, the project will proceed into Deerfield Beach. The city will do its best to coordinate with the contractor so that advance notice is provided before the work in Deerfield Beach commences.

The Deerfield Beach portion should be completed in approximately 2 – 4 days. The entire project is expected to take just over a month, with operations running 24 hours a day.

ABOUT THE PROJECT
The project will include the placement of approximately 25,000 cubic yards of sand on the public beach from SE 6th Street to SE 10th Street. Not only will the project replenish an area of the beach that has eroded due to wind and storms, but it will also serve to beautify and protect the area though the installation of native dune vegetation. By partnering with the Town of Hillsboro Beach on this renourishment project, the City of Deerfield Beach is able to address its most eroded beaches in a cost effective manner.

The City of Deerfield Beach and the project contractors are committed to minimizing the impact to the public during this work. Efforts will be made to limit beach closures as long as it is safe to do so. Updates with more specific information on the construction schedule and related beach closures will be posted on this website. To receive e-mail updates on this project, sign up for “Citywide Project Updates” under E-Subscriptions. For additional questions, contact the Environmental Services Department at 954-420-5562. Hillsboro residents can visit www.townofhillsborobeach.com for regular updates on the project

Pompano putting red light cameras on hold

Posted on 25 February 2011 by LeslieM

By David Volz

Pompano Beach City Commission has directed city staff not to bring forward any ordinances concerning red light cameras.

Mayor Lamar Fisher said, “We are going to put the red light camera matter on hold.”

Fisher said that in other cities, income from red light cameras has not covered expenses. People are challenging tickets and winning. The commission wants to see how the matter of red light cameras will play out.

Also, the commission had an extensive discussion on a 10 or 11 acre park in Collier City. A developer has offered to make the land available to the city and it might be developed into a football/soccer field and running track. Vice Mayor George Brummer said he would be interested in seeing it developed because there is a need for a football complex that can handle about 2,000 people on game days. This would be a multi-million dollar development.

South Florida under tornado watch

Posted on 17 January 2011 by LeslieM

South Florida from Palm Beach to the Keys is currently under a tornado watch as weather conditions deteriorate across the region. This is not the day to be in the water as water spouts and rip currents are highly likely.  A slight risk of tornadoes will be present over much of South Florida late this morning through the afternoon, primarily from the Cape Sable area northward through the Southeast Florida metro areas, with lesser chances over the western half of the peninsula.

Light to moderate rain will continue to spread north and affect all of South Florida through the midday and early afternoon hours. Clusters of heavy showers and a few thunderstorms will also move northeast and affect most of Miami-Dade County through noon, then Broward and Palm Beach counties between noon and 2 pm. These showers and storms will also spread over the near shore Atlantic waters and Biscayne Bay through 2 pm. The main threat with this activity will be lightning strikes, along with wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph in the stronger storms. Persons involved in outdoor activities today should be on the lookout for rapidly deteriorating conditions as the showers and thunderstorms approach from the southwest, and be ready to take shelter from the lightning strikes.
