(Deerfield Beach, FL) – An elderly driver escaped serious injuries after his sport utility vehicle slammed into the living room of his condo late Tuesday afternoon. Just before 4 p.m., BSO deputies and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue were called to Century Village. The 60-year-old male driver of the Chevy Envoy was transported to Broward Health North for treatment of neck and back injuries that were not serious. The BSFR Technical Rescue Team also responded and determined there was no structural damage to the building. The Deerfield Beach BSO Traffic Unit is continuing the investigation.

LHP Bank Robbery leads to car chase and deputy-involved shooting

Posted on 02 November 2012 by JLusk

At 11:21 a.m. the suspect entered the Chase Bank at 2285 N. Federal Highway in Pompano Beach, armed with a handgun and wearing a ski mask. Because glass was recently installed at the teller windows the robber was not able to jump the counters, as he has in past robberies. He fled from the bank empty handed. A description of his blue Dodge Ram pickup truck and his license plate number were immediately relayed to BSO deputies.

Deputies spotted the getaway truck on Atlantic Blvd and attempted to make a traffic stop but the driver refused to pull over and headed north on I-95. Just north of the Copans Road on-ramp Deputy German Bickbau performed a PIT maneuver, successfully sending the suspect’s truck onto the large grassy space east of the interstate. Dep. Bickbau’s marked cruiser struck a light pole and he was injured. Other deputies approached the suspect’s truck after it rolled and came to rest. Two deputies fired their weapons, striking the suspect and killing him.

Deputy Bickbau was flown to Broward Health Medical Center, complaining of back and abdominal pain. He is being treated at this time and is expected to recover.

According to FBI agents who responded to the scene, the suspect has an extensive criminal history and is suspected of committing six recent bank robberies at two Broward County banks:
Chase Bank at 2285 N. Federal Highway on 5/10/12, 6/15/12, & 11/2/12 and the Bank Atlantic (now BB&T) at 1299 S. Military Trail on 8/8/12, 8/29/12 and 9/29/12. For more details on the robberies, contact the FBI.

The suspect’s name is being withheld until he is positively identified and his family is notified.

International Fishing Pier, Public Beach & Middle School Aquatic Complex Closed

Posted on 26 October 2012 by Observer

The Deerfield Beach International Fishing Pier is currently closed due to damage caused by Hurricane Sandy.  Until the structure is deemed safe, patrons will not be permitted on the pier. It is anticipated that those damages closer to the shore will be repaired in the next several days.  Access to that portion of the pier will then be re-opened.  Areas with more significant damage at the far end of the pier will require that segment to remain closed for a more extended period of time which has yet to be determined.

The public beach remains closed to swimmers. Surfing is permitted to patrons that wear a leash. Body boarding is also permitted to those patrons that wear fins. The Ocean Rescue Division strongly cautions against these activities.

The City’s Middle School Aquatic Complex will remain closed today due to weather and debris in the pool.  For more information regarding these facility closures, please contact the Parks & Recreation Department at 954.480.4433.

Wayne Treacy gets 20 years

Posted on 23 October 2012 by JLusk

By Rachel Galvin

Wayne Treacy, now 18, found guilty of first degree attempted murder in July, faced a possible 50 year sentence after his brutal attack on Josie Lou Ratley in March 2010. But on Oct. 22, Broward Circuit Judge David Haimes seemed to make a compromise, sentencing him only to 20 years. Hopefully, this will offer some solace to Josie’s family, although Josie’s battle will be fought for a lifetime.

Coral Springs doctor charged with supplying drugs at Deerfield Beach “pill mill”

Posted on 26 September 2012 by JLusk

A Broward doctor is scheduled to be in court Friday accused of writing excessive pain pill prescriptions and failing to conduct proper medical examinations at what prosecutors called a “pill mill” in Deerfield Beach, court records show.

Federal prosecutors filed a lone conspiracy charge against Charles Neuringer, 73, of Coral Springs earlier this week.

Neuringer worked at the Coast to Coast Healthcare Management Clinic on the 300 block of Hillsboro Boulevard in Deerfield Beach between January 2010 and Dec. 16, 2010, when federal agents raided the business and shut it down, according to court records.

Prosecutors said Neuringer wrote prescriptions for more than 1,000 pain and other pills for undercover agents. If convicted, he faces a maximum of five years in prison, fines of up to $250,000 and possible forfeiture of property including nearly $477,000 he was paid for working at the clinic, according to the criminal charge filed Wednesday.
