Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) homicide detectives arrested a man wanted in connection to a Thanksgiving holiday murder.
At approximately 9:15 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 26, Broward Regional Communications received a call regarding a female found unresponsive near the 5300 block of NE 20 Terrace in Pompano Beach. BSO deputies responded and located the victim, Nadir Verissimo, inside the home unconscious and not breathing. Verissimo was pronounced deceased on scene at 9:26 a.m.
Crime scene and homicide detectives were notified and responded to investigate. The Medical Examiner office was also contacted.
Preliminary investigation revealed Verissimo’s roommate, the second victim involved, saw her alive inside the residence around 11 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 25. The roommate left the home and returned after 1 a.m. to discover the known suspect, Roberto De Lira, inside the residence. At 8:11 p.m. Thanksgiving night, detectives located De Lira at 1913 NE 4 St. in Deerfield Beach. He was arrested without incident for charges related to attempted murder, burglary with battery (domestic) and false imprisonment. On Monday, Nov. 30, the Medical Examiner concluded the death investigation into Verissimo death. Based on their findings, De Lira now faces an added charge of felony first degree murder.

Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) traffic homicide detectives are investigating a hit-and-run that occurred in Hillsboro Beach Sunday morning.
According to detectives, at approximately 4:52 a.m. on Nov. 29, an adult male was riding his bicycle northbound along the paved shoulder within the 1100 block of Hillsboro Mile in Hillsboro Beach. At the same time, Shannon Young was also traveling northbound in a white 2015 Mazda 6 when he struck the rear of the male’s bike. The impact forced the bicyclist off the bike and onto the roadway. Young then fled the scene northbound.
Hillsboro Beach Police Department and Broward Sheriff Fire Recue responded to the scene, and the bicyclist was transported to Broward Health Medical Center with life threatening injuries.
Following the incident, Hillsboro P.D. issued a BOLO (Be On the Lookout) for the vehicle. BSO Deerfield Beach deputies were able to locate and stop the vehicle without incident. Once stopped, Young cooperated with the investigation.
Excessive speed does not appear to be a contributing factor in this crash.

A lot of people like to fry their turkey for Thanksgiving. This may not be sucha smart option. It can be quite dangerous.
According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, “consumer grade turkey fryers use a substantial quantity of cooking oil at high temperatures and pose a significant danger. Additionally, the oil remains hot for hours after the unit is turned off. The use of turkey fryers by consumers can lead to devastating burns, other injuries and the destruction of property. The NFPA suggests that those who prefer deep fried turkey purchase it cooked from a grocer, food retailer or restaurant that prepares them using professional grade equipment.”
They add: “Thanksgiving is the top day for cooking fires to happen. According to a recent report published by the U. S. Fire Administration, an estimated 2,000 Thanksgiving Day fires in residential buildings occur annually in the U. S. By far, the leading cause of Thanksgiving Day fires in residential buildings is cooking. These fires occur most frequently between noon and 4 p.m.”
Be careful and have a great and safe Thanksgiving!

After months of planning, training and testing, ShotSpotter® is officially live in the Broward Sheriff’s Office’s Central Broward district.
ShotSpotter is a gunshot surveillance system that uses sensor-based technology to detect and locate outdoor gunfire in real-time. Once the system is alerted to gunfire, ShotSpotter employees vet the information and share the details with law enforcement. The information is often shared within seconds.
Nationally, ShotSpotter estimates that roughly 80 percent of gunfire incidents are not reported to law enforcement. ShotSpotter will allow deputies to respond more quickly to gunfire while also providing critical, real-time intelligence about specific incidents, increasing deputies’ awareness and preparation. The technology will also enhance deputies’ ability to make arrests, provide life-saving treatment to victims and gather evidence.
Another major benefit is building community trust. Residents of communities plagued by gunfire will be able to see and speak to deputies who arrive quickly to handle these dangerous calls.
BSO deputies recently conducted training to calibrate the ShotSpotter system in its Central Broward district, and the system went live on Wednesday evening.
A three-year ShotSpotter program in unincorporated Central Broward, an area with a high volume of calls for service related to gunfire, will cost $205,000. BSO participated in a ShotSpotter pilot program in 2009-2010 but declined to pursue the program further. Since then, ShotSpotter technology has grown and advanced, cutting down on false positive reports of gunfire. ShotSpotter guarantees a 90 percent accuracy rate regarding actual gunfire and location.
