A Budget Workshop will be held on Tuesday, August 9, 2022, at 7 p.m. in the City Commission Chambers located at the City Hall Complex, 150 NE 2 Ave., in Deerfield Beach. A quorum of the City Commission will be physically present at the workshop, and the City will be utilizing communications media technology with some City staff participating through video conferencing.
The public is invited to attend and observe the workshop in person or via Zoom. A copy of the agenda will be available at

A crowd assembled within The Schmidt Boca Raton History Museum on July 20 for the 2nd Summer Sips & Sounds event. People could first peruse the museum, which was completely renovated last fall. Next, they could mingle and enjoy hors d’ oeuvres and wine provided by The Seagate Hotel, before sitting down to enjoy the concert. The music theme was the ’70s this time and guests were delighted to hear some old tunes they had not heard for some time. Joanne Marie Kaye, who also is the executive director for the Festival of the Arts BOCA, took on the role of singer for the event, with Rick Krive also singing and playing the keyboard, and Scot Klarman playing the saxophone. They sang songs from The Carpenters, Carole King, Elton John, the Eagles, Manhattan Transfer and others.
“The 1970s was an exciting decade in Boca Raton as the town was experiencing exponential growth and change: the Historical Society was founded, I-95 was completed through Boca, Arvida was building gated communities, and IBM had arrived bringing an influx of new families,” says Museum Executive Director Mary Csar.
There will be one more Sips & Sounds on September 21. That one will focus on music from World War II. It will again be held at the Historic Town Hall, 71 North Federal Hwy., in downtown Boca Raton. Tickets for the concert are $30 for Boca Raton Historical Society members and $40 for non-members. For more information, visit www.bocahistory.org.

They are repairing the SE 13th Avenue Bridge in Deerfield.
The repair will require the closure of SE 13th Avenue, between SE 6th and SE 7th Street, starting on Wednesday, July 6, 2022. The work is expected to be completed in 90 days. The city and the contractor will ensure the repairs do not impact driveways, nor the intersection between SE 13th Avenue and SE 6th Street. Residents are advised to take alternate routes. The Broward Sheriff’s Office Department of Fire Rescue is proud to announce the grand opening of Fire Rescue Station 51, which will take place at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 1, at 1200 Veleiros Blvd. in Deerfield Beach.
City of Deerfield Beach officials along with administrative staff and field personnel from Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue will be on hand to conduct a fire station and apparatus tour.
The new station replaces the former fire station, which was previously located outside the city limits near Sample Road and Powerline Road. The newly built facility now resides inside the city limits and nearest to the station’s primary response area, which covers an approximate 3 square miles. The new facility is expected to considerably reduce response times to emergencies in the southwestern corridor of Deerfield Beach.
The new station is a modernized facility that consists of a single rescue apparatus bay within a single-story structure totaling 4,000 square feet. The building is designed to house and support a typical rescue response company, which consists of a rescue lieutenant and two firefighter-paramedics. The new Fire Station 51 includes a kitchen, a dining area, an office, an exercise room, a day room, private sleeping quarters, lockers, storage areas, and an emergency generator.

Due to the unusual amount of rain from last week’s storm, the Broward County Mosquito Control Section will be spraying larvicide to reduce the development of mosquitoes, such as the Aedes aegypti, a known disease-transmitting mosquito and aggressive biter. Larvicide kills mosquito larvae before they can become flying, biting adults.
Beginning Wednesday, June 8, and potentially for the two weeks following, truck-mounted sprayers will apply larvicide between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., weather permitting, in areas of Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, Dania Beach and Broward Municipal Services District (refer to   maps).
The larvicide being used is VectoBac WDG. This product is not harmful to humans, pets, bees, aquatic habitats or environmentally sensitive areas. The active ingredient is Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti, strain AM6552), a naturally occurring, biodegradable bacterial mosquito larvicide. It is certified by the Organic Materials Review Institute and is registered for use by the US Environmental Protection Agency. In addition, VectoBac WDG has been reviewed by the World Health Organization and is listed as a recommended formulation for control of mosquito larvae.
Broward County Mosquito Control Section continues to work closely with the Florida Department of Health and Code Enforcement partners in Broward’s 31 municipalities to reduce the population of mosquitoes and their habitats.
Residents and business owners are encouraged to reduce potential mosquito breeding habitats by regularly surveying their property to remove any standing water found in buckets, tires, planters, birdbaths and fountains. By reducing the number of mosquito breeding habitats, residents will reduce the number of adult mosquitoes that could transmit diseases.
Residents experiencing mosquito problems can request service by calling 311 or by completing the online Mosquito Service Request Form.

The National Weather Service is warning local communities to expect heavier than normal amounts of rainfall due to the advancing unnamed tropical system that has resulted in Broward County being placed under a Tropical Storm Warning and a Flood Watch. Broward County’s Public Works Department is completing standard pre-storm preparations to secure infrastructure.
- Highway and Bridge Maintenance storm protocols have been activated and road crews are proactively checking and clearing bridges and roadway drainage inlets and storm drain pipes.
- Pumps are being staged at low areas that are prone to flooding.
- Backup generators have been checked to ensure they will operate properly if needed.
- Traffic Engineering teams will closely monitor the County’s traffic signal system over the weekend and coordinate with Florida Department of Transportation, Florida Power & Light and municipalities to ensure any outages are addressed quickly.
- Utility divisions, including Traffic Engineering and Water & Wastewater Services, will handle calls for service and dispatching 24/7, as they normally do.
The County’s Public Works professionals are involved in the design, planning, construction and maintenance of County facilities, streets, highways and bridges, as well as the provision of a potable water supply and wastewater collection for unincorporated Broward County residents; operations of recycling, mosquito control, solid waste and environmental programs and facilities; and emergency planning and response.
The Broward County Emergency Operations Center remains at a Level 3 activation, which means it is assessing and monitoring the developing situation.

On May 25, the Kiwanis Club of Deerfield Beach had its Scholarship Awards Dinner at the Woman’s Club to present $12,000 worth of scholarships to local kids, in addition to three smaller scholarships also presented by Deerfield Kiwanis West.

To keep Broward County’s roads safe this Memorial Day holiday, the Broward Sheriff’s Office D.U.I. Task Force will conduct a high visibility saturation and enforcement operation over the long weekend.
The operation will occur daily from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Friday, May 27, to Monday, May 30. It will take place throughout Broward County.
The goal of the operation is to deter impaired drivers who pose an immediate danger to the public as well as to cite traffic violators. BSO urges everyone to enjoy the holiday weekend responsibly.
