PJ Rex, of Deerfield Ranch Winery, and Chef Angelo, from Angelo’s Station House Grille, try to balance culinary delights and the fruit of the vine.l Galvin

On April 2, Chef Angelo Morelli of Angelo’s Station House Grille and PJ Rex of Deerfield Ranch Winery from Sonoma, CA had a special private Q&A about their upcoming partnership at the Deerfield Wine & Food Festival. Also in attendance was Alejandro Ferrari, CEO of Strategic Importers Inc, which sells wines from Deerfield Ranch Wineries. Chef Angelo will be serving a four-course dinner paired with the wines that Rex has hand-picked to pair with each course. The festival will be held April 26-28 at the Quiet Waters Park in Deerfield Beach.

The event not only includes this special VIP dinner on Friday night, in addition to a Vineyard party, but also a Grand Tasting on Saturday with top local chefs, live entertainment, a farmer’s market, a retail bazaar and more. In addition, on Sunday is the MARTINI Jazz Bubbles & Brunch and Cruisin Classic Car Show.

Chef Angelo says winemakers have a tough time sometimes pairing with Italian food because they have to find a wine that can overpower the spiciness of the food. Even ubiquitous spices like oregano, rosemary, thyme and basil can be spicier than usual if not mixed in the right way to a dish.

Similarly, so much goes into the perfect wine. Rex’s husband, Robert, is called “the wine doctor” for his distinguishing palette and ability to coax the best flavors from their wines.

“You can’t make really good wine unless you have the best ingredients,” said Rex.

She picked a chardonnay to go with the bruschetta.

She said, “It is a nice pairing with acid from bruscetta, It is not over-oaked or over-buttered. It makes the bruscetta shine and makes the wine taste better.”

She paired the first course, the Mediterranean Calamari and Octopus Salad in a mint & herb vinaigrette served with sliced fresh tomato, arugula, and goat cheese, with pinot and the second course, fiocchi in a mascarpone, butter and sage sauce Pasta stuffed with four cheeses and a sweet pear, in a butter mascarpone and fresh sage sauce, with a merlot.

“When I see tomato sauce, I pull out the merlot,” she said.

For the third course, the Chicken Romano Involtino-with prosciutto, mozzarella, roasted peppers and spices in a butter sauce with peas and mushrooms, she picked a Cabarnet.

“It is very elegant and multi-layered,” she said.

For dessert, the tiramisu with strawberries, chocolate designs and cocoa powder, she selected Moscato.

“The tiramisu is not as sweet as you would expect. Moscato peps it up a step.”

Rex also came to South Florida to participate in the activities associated with the American Fine Wine Competition, including a cocktail party and gala held at the Boca Raton Resort and Club. http://www.americanfinewinecompetition.org.

FLICKS: FLIFF survives the Bahamas & brings celebrities home

Posted on 31 October 2012 by LeslieM

By Dave Montalbano

AdventuresOfCinemaDave.com

As we watched Hurricane Sandy, the 27th Ft. Lauderdale International Film Festival presented Giancarlo Esposito with his Career Achievement Award in Grand Bahama Island, after much improvisation. Due to Sandy’s wind and rain, outdoor festivities were moved indoors.

The celebrity focus moves locally this weekend. Oscarnominated for Baby Doll, actress Carroll Baker will attend a screening Sunday night at Cinema Paradiso of But Not For Me, costarring Clark Gable. After the screening, Carroll will be interviewed by Professor Hirsch and will talk about her work in such classics as Giant, How the West Was Won, Ironweed and Kindergarten Cop.

Carroll’s daughter Blanche Baker will likely be in attendance. An Emmy Award-winner for Best Supporting actress for the miniseries Holocaust, Blanche has an impressive resume within her own right. She wrote, directed and stars in the title role in Ruth Madoff Occupies Wall Street, a short subject that will be screened Saturday night at the Sunrise Civic Center.

Tonight at 9 p.m., Director Julia Dyer and actress Molly Parker will bring The Playground to Muvico Pompano. Costarring character actor John Hawkes, this film is a dark drama about suburban life among the beautiful people. If you miss the Pompano screening, The Playground will be playing at Cinema Paradiso and the Sunrise Civic Center on Friday and Saturday, respectfully. Some of the best of this year’s FLIFF films are documentaries featuring music. David Bromberg, Unsung Treasure is a delightful historical documentary. Falling under the spell of the Reverend Davis’s Blues influence, Bromberg thrives in this art form and jams with Dr. John in New Orleans. Bromberg’s dedication leads the young prodigy into musical magic with Phoebe Snow and George Harrison. When he dropped out of the spotlight, Bromberg’s creativity grew.

Blues also influences Joe Camilleri: Australia’s Maltese Falcon. Though Australian, the Joe Camilleri story is similar to that of the Blues Masters from New Orleans and Chicago. Music becomes redemption for a rowdy youth who could have chosen a life of crime.

On Election Day, Cinema Paradiso will screen Mr. Cao goes to Washington, a documentary about a successful Republican politician who won a congressional seat in New Orleans. Representative Cao is scheduled to attend and his story is fascinating.

16th Annual Dunn’s Run

Posted on 07 October 2012 by JLusk

By Rachel Galvin

The 16th Annual Dunn’s Run took place on Oct. 7 on a sunny morning in Deerfield beach. Thousands of runners and walkers lined up for the 5k walk/run and 5 mile run, which benefits Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County. Last year, they raised over $100,000.  In addition to the race, there were activities for the kids, including a bounce house and Paint a Firetruck. Local businesses participated by sponsorship or by having a booth.

Jon Volpi won the 5 mile race again this year, improving his time from last year’s race. Valerie Azra was the female winner of the 5 mile. Danielle Kleptan was the female winner for the 5k and Agustin Rey for the men.

In addition, they held a tribute before the race began for fallen BSO Deputy Christopher Schaub, who was on the force for 22 years, with a moment of silence and a release of 12 doves. Runners ran beneath a huge United States flag hoisted up by a Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue truck. Saxophonist Markus Howell, a senior at Deerfield High School, played the national anthem.

As the runners and walkers took off, Congressman Allen West was among them, as usual, holding the United States flag high. The Deerfield High School Cross Country team had many boys and girls running, including two boys who ran with their fathers and a mother and daughter together. Some parents brought even their littlest children out with them, some in strollers. One 9-year-old boy barely broke a sweat running in the race and racing in among some of the first of the pack. Sports mascots like TD the Dolphin, Billy the Marlin and Stanley C. Panther gave the runners high fives as they crossed the starting line. They also was a drum line along the route playing in support.
