FLICKS: 300: Rise of an Empire

When I posted the review of 300 on my blog seven years ago, the views were outstanding. The first responses that I received were complimentary, especially from an individual claiming to be in the military. Eventually, the responses turned sour, nasty and insulting. The Iranian government banned 300 due to the depiction of the Persian Army. Seven years later, this entry still receives a regular dosage of spam.

While not as good as its predecessor, 300: Rise of An Empire has opened with a strong box office, revealing that ticket buyers enjoy watching history taught by comic books. Based on Frank Miller’s graphic novels, this new 300 is more of a companion piece than a direct sequel to the old 300.

The film opens a generation before the events of the first movie. King Darius is killed by an arrow shot by Themistocles (Sullivan Stapleton) in battle. The late King Darius was the father of Xeres (Rodrigo Santoro), a deluded individual who proclaims himself a god. While the delusional King seeks the spotlight, behind the scenes Artemisia (Eva Green) pulls the strings of Persian politics. Undefeated as the Admiral of the Seas, Artemisia seeks to avenge the glory of King Darius.

As a ragtag selection of city states, Greece is a bickering democracy awaiting to be conquered. Themistocles, an Athenian, is fully aware of these political problems and desperately seeks cooperation with the Spartans, especially Queen Gorgo (Lena Headey). Gorgo is the widow of the king, whose army of 300 Spartans were slaughtered by the Xeres and his Persian Army of thousands. Themistocles is fully aware that Artemisia has topower to crush the bickering Greek Isle.

Like the first 300, the computer graphics create vivid action scenes involving navy battles. Unlike the first 300, this new movie seems sloppy in direction. Utilizing the 3-D technology, 300 Rise of an Empire features too many scenes of splattered blood floating in the air.

Despite some disappointing visuals, this film is a fun movie to learn about Greek and Persian history. While Stapleton is a likeable leading man, it is the women who rule this empire. While reprising her role from the first movie, Headey gives a stoic performance with simmering rage. As the angry Artemisia, Green is given many memorable moments with a sword.

As the title role in Frank Miller’s Sin City: A Dame to Kill

For Green cements her image as today’s femme fatale.

Sawgrass Expressway Expansion mtg. TODAY

Dear Editor:

Some of you may have read [in the newspaper] that the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization (M.P.O.) will be discussing expanding the Sawgrass Expressway through 10th Street at their next meeting TODAY, March 13 in the Trade Centre South building, 100 W. Cypress Creek Road, Suite 850, Ft. Lauderdale at 9:30 a.m.

This is being brought forward by the Vice Mayor of Coral Springs, Larry Vignola.

Obviously, this will have a tremendous effect on our city.

Many of you have shared with me your concerns regarding this type of expansion. I too am very concerned with the impact this will have on our quality of life. I recommend to those of you who wish to express your feelings on the matter to contact Coral Springs Vice Mayor Vignola at lvignola@coralsprings.org.

While I encourage you to be passionate in expressing your concerns, and while I recognize that many of you share my passion for this issue, I implore you to be respectful and courteous to Vice Mayor Vignola.

Bill Ganz

District 4 commissioner

Deerfield Beach

Beach renourishment, ELECTION

February was a very eventful month in [Broward County] District 4.

From Pompano’s Unity in the Community event, Lighthouse Point’s Keeper Days, Deerfield Beach’s Founders’ Days weekend, to the many celebrations for Black History Month, it was a great month to be out and about in our community.

While it was great to see so much civic involvement, an issue that continues to be at the forefront of my agenda has been the renourishment of our beautiful beaches.

Our economy relies heavily on the strength of our beaches and critical time passes each day that we do not have the necessary federal permits in hand. The good news is that we have all of our necessary permits and approvals from the State of Florida.

Last year, we received nearly $10 BILLION in our local economy from the 13 million visitors who came to Broward for our beautiful beaches.

As it currently stands, we are awaiting the biological opinion from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Marine Fisheries (NOAA Fisheries).

I traveled to Washington, D.C. earlier this month to advocate for our beaches and returned with renewed hope that they understand the critical nature of our project and are motivated to issue our permit.

Persistence is key to our success and I will not stop until I see the trucks hauling sand to our beach.

We now need your help in contacting all of our federal elected officials in Washington, D.C. Please contact each of their offices and respectfully urge our representatives to do the following:

Please urge the Secretary of Commerce to ensure that the biological opinion of the Segment II Beach Project is completed as soon as possible.”

You can find your federal representative by visiting www.house.gov and clicking on Find Your Representative.

ELECTION

March is Election month for many of Broward’s municipalities and Tuesday was Election Day. It is often said that the government closest to the people governs most effectively.

For most Broward residents, your city and county elected officials comprise your local government that provides the majority of your essential services.

As a former [Lighthouse Point] city commissioner, I know all too well that voter turnout is key to a successful election.

If there is anything we can do to assist you with your vision for a better Broward, please do not hesitate to contact our office at 954-357-7004 or by email at clamarca@broward.org. Or visit our website www.broward.org/district4,

As always, it is my honor to serve you.

The Cove Bagel: Best breakfast & lunch all day

Posted on 13 February 2014 by LeslieM

The real New York way!

By Becki Coffy

If you are looking for a unique breakfast and lunch restaurant in Deerfield Beach, look no further than The Cove Bagel and Deli.

This special eatery offers a full breakfast selection and an authentic deli with all the delicious meats and salads you enjoyed back home and have been searching for here in town.

With 40 years in the business, Steve and Karen Kay opened their restaurant in Deerfield Beach 10 years ago. The help of their children, Stacy and Adam, truly makes this a family affair. From babies to Baby Boomers, there is something to meet everyone’s satisfaction.

The menu is quite extensive, and it really was difficult for my husband and me to select just one dish to sample. My husband decided to enjoy something from the breakfast menu, so I chose something from the lunch side.

Had I realized they offered Eggs Benedict, my decision would have been made for me! Breakfast is served all day and only farm fresh eggs and the freshest ingredients are used. The three-egg omelets are enormous and filled with cheeses, meats, fresh vegetables, Nova or you may create your own. Muffins, English muffins, toast and, of course, bagels are available with your meal.

My dining partner chose The Cove Slam, which includes French toast or pancakes, eggs, bacon and sausage. The pancakes were light, fluffy and definitely some of the best we’ve had in Florida. The bacon and sausage had great flavor and were cooked just the way we like it. A unique dish that I intend to try in the future is the crunchy French toast — French toast smothered with frosted flakes and grilled to a crisp finish.

For my selection, I chose the classic Reuben sandwich stacked high with mounds of National Deli corned beef, Swiss cheese and sauerkraut on grilled rye and served with French fries and two huge half sour pickles that were fabulous.

Steve, the owner, also brought us a piece of marble chiffon cake, complimentary to all his customers on the weekends, while the supply lasts. He often offers complimentary items so his customers can sample something they may not usually order.

The lunch menu offers homemade matzo ball and chicken noodle soup, plus the soup of the day and 10 types of burgers, including a turkey burger and a turkey patty melt. All burgers are served with fries, lettuce, tomato, onion, coleslaw and pickle – no skimping here! Fish and chips, chicken tenders and shrimp in a basket are all available for $7.99. Triple Decker club, chopped liver, tongue, tuna, chicken, egg, shrimp and whitefish salad sandwiches help round out the menu. Be sure to try any of their “hot opens” – turkey, brisket or roast beef with gravy and French fries.

For those looking for lighter fare, there are grilled chicken sandwiches and seven salad choices from which to choose. Cove specialties include cheese blintzes and potato pancakes. Don’t forget to try one of their famous super deli sandwiches – corned beef, pastrami and brisket to name a few.

Our wonderful waitress, Connie, says she has a pastrami sandwich every day. The ingredients used in the restaurant are never frozen, and the salads are made in small batches throughout the day so that everything is amazingly fresh. It doesn’t get much better than this!

Although seating is available inside and out, we sat inside and enjoyed looking at all the memorabilia collected over the past 45 years. Whether hanging on the wall, sitting on the shelf or hiding in the corner, there was something to bring back great memories from a simpler time.

Outside seating is petfriendly and they will even bring a bowl of water out for your furry companion!

The Cove Bagel and Deli is located in The Cove Shopping Center on Hillsboro Boulevard at the Intracoastal in Deerfield Beach. Breakfast and lunch are served all day. They are open six days a week from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (closed on Mondays). A children’s menu for both breakfast and lunch is offered. Catering services and free delivery to local businesses and residences is available. 954- 481-8600.

Steve and his wife, Karen, make a point of learning their customer’s names and making everyone feel welcome and at home. The prices are affordable, the portions are large and the food is delicious. The Kays really live up to their motto, “The old-fashioned way is still the best way.”

Be sure to stop by and enjoy all that The Cove Bagel and Deli has to offer. Steve and Karen have made this more than a restaurant, they’ve made it part of the neighborhood. Until we eat again.

PUBLISHER’S PERSPECTIVE: It is now time to stop the charade…about “medical” marijuana

Posted on 13 February 2014 by LeslieM

If you truly have Parkinson’s disease, glaucoma, multiple sclerosis or certain types of cancer (the main “legal” reasons now being mentioned), and your doctor recommends for you to smoke marijuana for relief, be sure to get it in writing from the doctor. That is so that when you suffer the negative consequences of smoking marijuana, such as emphysema or cancer, there is someone else to blame and perhaps sue.

It is shameful how this issue is being manipulated by certain politicians, especially a certain former governor, who is proving again that he has no shame, and will do or say anything to try to “win” an election.

Negatives far outweigh any benefits from people smoking pot, at least based on my experience as an employer. One of my first negative experiences a number of years ago was when I sent three of my young mechanics down to a Caribbean Island to install some of our equipment on a sugar plantation. The job should have taken a week.

However, three weeks went by and we had not heard from them. This was before cell phones. Therefore, I called the customer, who checked on them and complained that my guys were just sitting around smoking “pot.” I ordered them back home, fired them immediately and sent a supervisor with some others to finish the job. That one incident cost us tens of thousands of dollars and lost a multi-million dollar customer. Lunch time started becoming a problem as some of our folks began indulging themselves in their pot smoking during lunch and came back to work causing accidents. Our workers compensation rate doubled, then doubled again before we figured out what was causing the accidents and took proper action with drug tests, etc. However, just one of the after lunch “accidents” put a man in the hospital for several months and cost over a million dollars in medical costs.

As a final example, a few years ago thousands of brochures on our products had to be thrown away when our man in charge got high on pot and changed the instructions to the printer to weird colors which made them unusable. We fired him, of course, but thousands of dollars were lost, as the brochures had to be corrected by others and reprinted.

These are just a few examples, and we are just one small company. The Florida Supreme Court recently agreed to put the issue on an upcoming statewide vote requiring only 60 percent approval. Certain special interest entities who will make big money are positioning themselves already to finance pushing it through. If it passes, and I’m being told there’s a good chance it will pass, many people will lose their jobs as many employers will simply “throw in the towel” and invest elsewhere.

4th Annual JA Uncorked

Posted on 10 February 2014 by JLusk

By Rachel Galvin

On Jan. 25, JA World Huizenga Center in Coconut Creek was abuzz with people for the 4th Annual JA Uncorked, a soiree benefiting Junior Achievement (JA), which has helped children worldwide since its inception in 1919 in Colorado. The South Florida branch began in 1959 in Ft. Lauderdale.

Their goal is to inspire and educate, to prepare young students for the challenges of a global economy. They have many programs that do just that, including JA Biz Town at the Huizenga Center, which allows kids to work in a mock town complete with everything from a television studio to a bank, police station and more, completely operated by the kids, who learn valuable skills in various age-appropriate areas throughout their visit.

In 2009, the Circle of Wise Women group created JA Uncorked as a way to raise funds for JA. They exceeded their goal of raising $100,000 this year and about 800 people attended. They have raised $1,550,000 to date.

Their “Fork to Cork Affair” included a variety of wines, spirits and craft beers, as well as finely-crafted culinary selections and a “Dessert Bash.” There was even a Farm to Table section with vendors offering sustainable solutions. Guests mixed and mingled, bid on auction items, purchased raffle tickets and danced to the Edge Band in the CLUB RED by Stoli VIP Lounge hosted by the Florida Panthers Foundation.

Many students from the Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale helped some of the chefs.

One student, Tavares “Brody” Morgan, who worked with Ritz Carlton, could not be more excited.

He said, “I am glad when we get a chance to come to this type of event. I can get exposure and see businesses I have never heard of.”

Executive Chef of Timpano in Ft. Lauderdale Asher Roebuck, who acted as Chef Liaison, said, “This is my second year. I personally think it is a great event. Anytime you can do something for kids, I am all for it.”

FLICKS: Captain Phillips, Escape Plan & Great Beauty

Posted on 27 November 2013 by LeslieM

By Dave Montalbano

http://cinemadave.livejournal.com

In the midst of covering the 28th Annual Ft. Lauderdale International Film Festival and the 30th Miami Book Fair International, one of the most asked questions I heard was, “Have you seen Captain Phillips?

Captain Phillips has Oscar nomination written all over it. It is a big story about an international incident circa 2009. It features Oscar winner Tom Hanks acting his heart out as the title character, with lesser-known actors adding believable menace to our everyday hero. So is Captain Phillips another manufactured Oscar contender like The Butler? Hardly. Captain Phillips captures the claustrophobic despair of being a hostage.

The Captain skippers a cargo ship of charitable supplies off the African coast. When the US-flagged MV Maersk Alabama is hijacked by Somali pirates, Captain Phillips must utilize his wits to save his crew. What was supposed to be a routine kidnapping for these thugs, becomes a global television affair involving the U.S. Navy. Perhaps if these pirates read Davy Jones & the Heart of Darkness, they would not have gotten involved in such a disastrous venture.

Best known for his work on the overrated Bourne amnesia spy movies, the director Paul Greengrass, who was Oscar-nominated for United 93, a movie about the 9/11 plane crash. Thanks to Greengrass, the intensity of Captain Phillips never lets up as a human story. When violence occurs, it is sudden, explosive and quick. One movie that no one mentioned to me was Escape Plan, the Sylvester Stallone – Arnold Schwarzenegger buddy movie. This team-up has been three decades in the making, though diffused by the Sylvester- Arnold Expendables of recent years. Escape Plan is pure Saturday matinee afternoon escapism.

Ray Breslin (Stallone) makes a living breaking out inescapable prisons and has written a book about the subject. After a successful payday, Breslin is kidnapped and sent to the Tomb, a prison of his own design. The villainous prison warren (Jim Cavielzel) is a student of Breslin and has an odious henchman (Vinnie Jones) do his evil bidding for him. Fortunately, Breslin befriends Emil Rottmayer (Arnold), a convict who rules the prison yard. The two team up to plan an audacious escape.

Despite a too-pat ending, Escape Plan works as an action thriller. To the credit of Summit Entertainment Marketing executives, the trailer did not reveal important plot twists and surprises. The two 60-year-old action icons provide some edge-of-your-seat moments with humor. While Captain Phillips is an Oscar contender, Escape Plan is a lot of fun.

Italy’s Oscar selection for Best Foreign movie, Great Beauty, opens tomorrow. The Observer will have a full review in next week’s edition.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Government shut-down

Dear Editor:

Shutting down the government is the most unpatriotic thing Congress could do.

We elected the 535 men and women who serve in the House and Senate to do a job – and that job does not include such extreme partisan bickering that they become incapable of rectifying their differences to keep the government running.

Congress had a deadline: 11:59 PM EDT Monday night. Since they failed to meet it and the government has shut down, every single one of the 535 members should be voted out in their next election.

Lt. Col. Allen B. West, USA (ret)

U.S. Congressman (2011-2013)

Praises for devoted teachers

Dear Editor:

I hear so many stories this school year about good/bad teachers and it is only a month-plus into the school year.

So I wanted to write this letter and show those who speak poorly that there is good … even great, out there.

On a recent Wednesday there was a torrential downpour as I was driving my son to school. As I pulled up to the car line, I noticed the lot was flooded and yet teachers who were drenched to their hips, cold and holding umbrellas as lightning hit all around walked to each car and sheltered each child to the school. Some carrying the littlest one to the door. Now that’s devotion to each and every child! It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a WHOLE school come together and take care of their own. It all works under the direction of the principal, Dr. Kaye at Somerset Pines Academy.

So know although its early in the school year, there are MANY wonderful teachers out there and I am grateful to ours!

Let’s start praising those who do so much for our children because, like our children, they too need a pat on the back every once in awhile to make them feel appreciated.

Experience a tour of Italy at Antonio’s Ristoranté

Posted on 22 August 2013 by LeslieM

Pages 09-16By Becki Coffy

If you are looking for authentic, wonderful Italian food, then look no further than Antonio’s Ristoranté in The Cove Shopping Center.

Owners Alex Poulous and Paul Ferorelli have created a little piece of Italy right here in Deerfield Beach.

As soon as my husband and I walked through the door, we were greeted with the tantalizing scents of tomato, basil, garlic and fresh bread. White tablecloths and soft colors invite you to sit and relax. Fried calamari, mussels and Calamari Antonio, Scungilli salad, mozzarella sticks and homemade soups are available to start your meal.

We chose to skip the appetizers and head straight for the entree. Before we ordered, we were served a big basket of fresh garlic rolls. The rolls can be ordered with or without garlic, but when in Rome … The rolls were soft, warm, tender and covered with fresh garlic and olive oil.

For his entrée, my husband tried the Chicken Dijon. This chicken dish is sautéed with mushrooms and artichoke hearts and served in a white wine and Dijon mustard sauce with cream. There are many other chicken dishes to choose from, including Chicken Marsala, Francese, Parmagiana and Cacciatore, to mention a few. His meal included either soup or salad and a side of pasta with red sauce.

He chose to start with the Pasta Fagioli soup that was thick with beans, pasta and a hearty broth. I began my meal with the garden salad. Creamy Garlic, an Italian vinaigrette and Creamy Romano dressings are available. I tried the Creamy Romano, and it was delicious.

Since Antonio’s is wellknown for its fresh fish, I decided to try one of the daily specials and ordered the Snapper Francese. The fish was tender, moist and lightly breaded and cooked in a fresh lemon, broth and cream sauce. To go with my snapper, I chose the broccoli sautéed with toasted fresh garlic and olive oil and could not have been happier. The garlic was crisp and complemented the vegetable perfectly. My partner selected the pasta with red sauce as his side. The homemade sauce was thick and rich and full of spices and tomatoes. It was a wonderful delicate sauce for his pasta.

Shrimp Scampi, Fra Diavolo and Armando (shrimp sautéed with scallions, sun dried tomatoes, mushrooms, artichoke hearts in a rose sauce) and Linguini with white or red clam sauce are just a few of the seafood dishes available. Of course, the traditional Lasagna, Ravioli and Ziti are always popular selections.

Antonio’s menu offers veal choices such as Veal Milanese, Marsala, Francese and Parmagiana.

Pasta dishes include pasta with garlic and oil, meatballs or sausage, or marinara sauce, Fettuccine Alfredo, Penne alla Vodka, Angel Hair Carbonara and more.

For a more casual dinner, you may order a Calzone or Stromboli or try one of their homemade or specialty pizzas.

There are daily specials that should not be missed. The night we dined at Antonio’s, we could choose from Snapper, Tilapia and Salmon. All fish may be ordered Francese or broiled.

Paul Ferorelli feels the secret to their wonderful cuisine is the consistency. If you have a sweet tooth, be sure to try their cheesecake or any of their traditional Italian desserts such as Cannoli, Tiramisu and Spumoni ice cream.

Be sure to give this restaurant a try the first chance you get. You will not be disappointed. Antonio’s has been part of the Deerfield Beach community for over 40 years. They also have FREE delivery.

Antonio’s is located at 1636 SE 3 Ct. in The Cove Shopping Center. For reservations, call 954-427-4871 or 954-427-9002.

For more information, including menu, visit www.antoniosdeerfieldbeach.com.
