Amato’s Italian Grill

Posted on 08 August 2013 by LeslieM

Pages 09-16By Rachel Galvin

In the mood for Italian? Step into Amato’s Italian Grill, a perfect place for a romantic interlude or a family gathering. With Southern Italian flair, the chef cooks up everything from sandwiches, pizzas and calzones to favorites like linguini with red or white clam sauce, Mussels Marinara, Chicken Marsala, Veal Parmesean or Eggplant Rollatine. The meal begins with a generous helping of plain or garlic knots teeming with butter and garlic. The Bruschetta Italiana is an appetizer that will make your mouth water for more. Chopped tomatoes, red onions and basil set atop Italian bread saturated with balsamic vinegar and oil make for a crunchy start and a melt-in-your-mouth, slightly spicy finish. Looking for a milder beginner, try the can’tget- enough Pasta Fagioli, comfort food at its finest. For a light tasting entree that will fill you up and satiate your Italian craving, try the Chicken Francese. One of the more popular dishes, these thin egg-washed slices of tender chicken are pan sauteed in a lemony white wine sauce, made from fresh squeezed lemons. Of course, no dinner is complete without the finishing touch – a dessert. Try their tiramisu, made from scratch with espresso lady fingers, Kahlua, Marscapone cheese, almond cookie and other tasty ingredients. Presented with a criss-cross pattern of chocolate over the dusting of cookie on top, this tiramisu is thick and creamy and sits atop a bed of powdered sugar.

To quench your thirst, there is wine by the glass or carafe, or bring your own bottle ($15 corking fee). There also is domestic and imported beer, soda and San Pellegrino.

Owner Reyna Amato’s favorite dishes are the clams, the Fruta di Mare and Chicken Amato. All of her dishes are made with family recipes. She began her life in cooking at the age of 14 working with her parents at their pizzeria in New Jersey. Her family moved to the states from Palermo, Italy. She moved to Florida four years ago and opened Amato’s in 2010.

Everything is homemade,” she said. “It is economically-priced, but fresh and high quality. Nothing is pre-packaged. The pizza is made every day. We have New York and Sicilian style.”

She plans on bringing entertainment back. At one time, it was outside on the patio; now, she plans to make it more intimate, allowing a single guitarist to play inside at certain times. For now, Italian music plays in the background.

They have unbelievable specials here, such as their lunch special – half a sandwich, cup of soup/ salad and a slice of pizza for only $6.99. Thursday is seafood night. For under $10, you get your choice of a wide selection of fish or seafood with your choice of sauce. Their early bird special is buy one plus two beverages and get second entree for $1.99. Ask about other specials and look for coupons here in the Observer.

Amato’s Italian Grill is located at 1901 N. Federal Hwy., Unit #112B, in the Pompano Citi Centre, Pompano Beach, FL 33062. Open Monday to Thursday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday noon to 10 p.m., they also do take-out and delivery. Call 954-582-9211. Heart Rock Sushi — 2nd anniversary

Posted on 25 April 2013 by LeslieM

Pages 09-16By Becki Coffy

Anniversaries are always something special. They are a celebration filled with joy and the recognition of a very special occasion.

My son, Ben, and I had the good fortune of enjoying the second anniversary festivities at Heart Rock Sushi Japanese restaurant last Wednesday night. Heart Rock Sushi restaurant in Ft. Lauderdale has been run for over 20 years, by owner, Ann Yamusenor, and her son, Moose. They have done an outstanding job in providing Lighthouse Point with a wonderful local spot to enjoy fine food and great friends.

The beauty of the restaurant, decorated in earth tones with greenery and soft lighting, immediately relaxes you and sets the tone for the rest of the evening. Soft jazz music for the anniversary special enhanced the night. To the delight of the crowd, Miss Sunset Place Teen U.S.A. enchanted the room with classical Tai dancing.

Where to begin on this extensive menu is always a difficult decision. With 13 appetizers, 12 sushi bar appetizers, seven soups and six salads to choose from, it is no easy feat. Our waiter, Faizal, helped us navigate through the many choices.

He suggested we begin with the Chicken Satay, which was prepared in a light sauce of coconut milk, lemon grass, turmeric and a hint of curry. The curry added just enough heat to keep the dish vibrant. It was served with a side of creamy peanut sauce (one of my personal favorites) and a light chopped cucumber, carrot and red onion salad in a sweet and tangy dressing. The combination of the cool salad with the curried chicken satay was a wonderful pairing.

For our second appetizer, we chose the Lobster Rangoon. The moment my son and I bit into this appetizer, we both agreed it was the best we’ve ever tasted. I’ve had Rangoon appetizers many times in my life and all were good, some great. But this dish topped them all. The delicately-fried shell, so crisp and light, seemed to melt in your mouth and the pop of flavor from the lobster and cream cheese filling was heavenly. I recommend this dish to anyone who dines at the Heart Rock.

My son has sampled many different sushi rolls from the Heart Rock, so our waiter suggested he try the Heart Rock signature roll for something different. It was a large roll stuffed with tuna, salmon, yellowtail and white fish. It was delightfully fresh and clean. We both enjoyed every bite of this delicacy.

For my selection, I chose the Monsoon Shrimp. This dish was served with a choice of soup or salad. The house salad came with a light ginger dressing and was very good. Large butterflied shrimp, marinated with oyster sauce and garlic, were served with snow pea pods, broccoli, carrots, squash and onion served in a sweet and spicy chili sauce. I ordered the dish mild and enjoyed the slight kick of heat that the chili sauce delivered.

We were just too full and too satisfied to order dessert. However, I can personally suggest the deep fried tempura banana and ice cream if you have any room left. What an indulgence!

The Heart Rock Sushi Restaurant, located at 4460 N. Federal Hwy. in Lighthouse Point, offers a happy hour Monday through Friday from 5-8 p.m. with several appetizers ranging from $3-$7. House drinks are $5.

Reservations can be made at 954-532-1763.

Until we eat again …

Municipal Election

Dear Editor:

It’s Wednesday after the election and I went online to find out the results.

The winner was not known yet, but right now, I am ashamed to be a Deerfield resident… with an election I think so important, which will really affect our daily lives, like the utility tax.

I can’t believe under 6,000 thousand people voted! I do not know the exact number of registered voters in Deerfield, but I damn well think it’s more than that.

I am disgusted.

Freedom of Speech

Dear Editor:

At Brooklyn College, police were called to check people attending a “Program in favor of Palestinians” presented by Jewish professor from Columbia University Judith Butler and activist Omar Barghouti.

Jewish groups, including [American lawyer, jurist, and political commentator Alan] Dershowitz wanted the college to withdraw sponsorship — which didn’t happen.

President of the College Karen Gould was attacked for allowing a program sponsored by the Political Science Dept. and other student groups. Karen said she didn’t agree with the program but was FOR free speech, as are many people. There was plenty of “hate mongering to shut down the event.”

The event sold out and received a standing ovation.

They said anti-semitism in Europe was equal to racism today in Israel against Palestinians. By the way, there are many professors and Israelis who also believe Palestinians have been treated poorly.

In the film “Gatekeepers,” top Israeli secret service people also felt that their policy was too rigid and not looking for peace. In the program, they supported equal rights for Palestinians and the event had a “waiting list.”

I am sure many people were upset when Dershowitz was banned from speaking and would be just as upset if Jewish groups who believe Israel is never wrong were not allowed to speak.

In other words, “free speech” for both sides is what all Americans should be FOR.

Election-time statements: True or False?

Dear Editor:

Echoing the most mendacious national campaign in my memory — and I’m no longer young, I find in Deerfield Beach a similar performance by a perennial candidate to preside at commission meetings. In this campaign, I’ve been hearing bizarre departures from FACT.

Large raises in salary to senior staff have been cited as being unwarranted. FACT: there were no across-the-board salary raises for senior staff. Certain positions were eliminated and taken over by staff members who were entitled to more pay for increased responsibilities and longer hours of work. Each adjustment was determined on a one-by-one basis. All in all, the changes have resulted in a net savings for the city.

As to raises in salary for elected officials, this cost-ofliving increase was mandated by an ordinance in 2004.

FACT: Most of these officials put in at least 40 hours per week in serving their districts and the city. Their hours vary since they serve at the convenience of citizens — which can be at all hours.

The mayoral candidate was echoed by one candidate for commission as saying that “this job is part-time and easily can be managed by scheduling” is unrealistic. It is true that parts of some districts have been overlooked by certain commissioners. But it is also true that direct contact by citizens with hard working commissioners and staff have served well since the current administration has been in place.

The fire assessment [fee] preceded by years the recent adoption on the utility tax. FACT: For a candidate, coupling them is truly a disservice to the truth.

The perennial candidate’s campaign against a perception of inequities in water rates for the Century Village complex is not ancient history as was stated. FACT: Those attacks against water rates for Century Village were quite recent. Even more recent is the current about-face. You may watch the candidate addressing the commission on video.

Education = Quality of Life

Dear Editor:

[There are] too many homes with single mothers and fatherless children.

Education is not a racial issue. It’s a social one across the board.

We have lowered the standards for passing grades to facilitate the overcrowded schools and the bureaucratic obesity of school board systems. Yes, education starts at home always has, always will.

We don’t need an Ivy League study to know this. It’s common sense. Oh yes, I forgot, common sense is not common.

And neither are family values. When you have babies having babies in eighth and ninth grade and opting out from school to welfare (remember, not a racial issue, it’s a social one across the board) this equals a poorer quality of life and a burden for all of society.

As we see in today’s time, a diploma or degree is not automatic employment.

What can we do to help single mothers with fatherless children on the way? Seems like a good question for our Ivy Leagues to study.

RE: Beach parking stickers

Dear Editor:

I have owned property in Deerfield Beach for over 15 years and have enjoyed the city and the area.

I live in Florida 5 to 6 months of the year and participate in the community by becoming involved, volunteering and participating in community projects.

My automobile is registered in Florida. I pay property taxes. I have residential utility bills and hope to soon have a Florida driver’s license.

For years, I have purchased a beach parking sticker and enjoyed the beautiful beach.

This season, when I attempted to purchase the parking sticker for 2013, I was denied the ability to purchase the sticker because I did not have a Florida driver’s license. I had all the documentation that, in the past years, allowed the purchase of the [now] $100 parking sticker.

Why has this rule been changed so that we, who own property and contribute to the community, are prevented from having a parking sticker this year?

Code enforcement questions

Dear Editor:

Although our family has lived in Little Harbor in Deerfield Beach since the early ‘70s, I’ve recently noticed a substantial change and I have a few questions and comments.

I’ve always heard “What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.”

This is not the case here. Some neighbors were recently cited for having their hedges over 4 ft. from street to house and sent letters to cut them back within days or be fined. This IS a code violation. Yet others are to the street and well over 10 ft.

Is this a case of who’s who? I understand rules but they are meant for all, NOT a select few.

Also, a tree was requested for permit to be removed. It is damaging two vehicles and not promoting grass to grow, has termites (city states termites only in part of the tree)… Did I mention it is a Black Olive? Yet, the tree still stands. How can one better their property, better their neighborhood and make their property value and their neighbors’ go up?

With elections coming up, I would assume someone will gladly answer. I mean, I need to know before our family casts our vote. Fair is fair for all, NOT just a select few!!
