This workshop will show the basics of Paper Mache. Give old magazines, junk mail and other unwanted papers a new lease on life. Transform simple materials into functional works of art. An optional workshop the following Saturday, Aug. 4, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., will teach how to hand paint your bowls or pots made the previous week. (Paper Mache needs multiple days to dry before it can be painted). The class includes all materials and no experience is necessary. Space available for 12 students. Ages 16+. $30.

Poster Contest — Seeking artists

The City of Deerfield Beach is looking for artists to design this year’s 39th Annual Festival of the Arts poster. This year’s theme is The Beach & Deerfield Beach Pier. It is that time again… time for top area chefs to grill up their best burgers to try to get the coveted win. Meet the contenders: M.E.A.T. Eatery & Taproom, Shake Shack, Flashback Diner, Morton’s Steak House, Big Joe’s Burgers and Wings, Kapow Noodle Bar, Burton’s Grill & Bar, TooJay’s Gourmet Deli, Rockn Angels, Crazy Uncle Mike’s, Burger Craze, Tucker Duke’s Lunchbox, ROK:BRGR and Batch Gastropub, Cheffrey Eats Food Truck, Funky Buddha & more! Those who are coming to compete will travel from far and wide, and some from not so far away… Some are from as far distant as South Beach and West Palm Beach, while others are right here in Deerfield Beach and Boca Raton.

Each hand-picked chef will create their grilling masterpieces and present them to a prestigious table of Grill Master Judges, which includes a few well known “burger connoisseurs” like Rey De La Osa, Chief Grill Master Team Captain from Publix Aprons Cooking School, Jamie Frankel from Burgers by the Beach and (his new blog “Floridian Beer Society”), Jan Norris from JanNorris.com, Alex Callegari from “The Firefighter Foodie,” Rob Adler from “Weekend Broward,” Former Commissioner Robert S. Weinroth from City of Boca Raton and Danny Rivera from BIG 1059.

Judges will pick the Best Grill Master and Best Alternative Grill Master while the guests will vote with their wooden chip for “People’s Choice” and will determine the champion to hold the title as the Best Battle Burger.

This event is more than just burgers. There are also craft beers and other spirits to enjoy, plus other goodies to sample while perusing vendor booths.

A portion of proceeds benefit PROPEL (People Reaching Out to Provide Education and Leadership), a non-profit located in Boca Raton, which offers weekly events for kids in the area of arts, education and recreation.

The Boca Burger Battle is presented by WineEvents.com, and produced by the south Florida event production company BocaRaton.com & The BITES! Network, which also produces the Boca Raton Wine and Food Festival every November.

On July 4, at midnight, Ocean Way from Hillsboro Boulevard to SE 4 St., the Main Beach Parking Lot, the lot behind Ocean Rescue and the Pier Parking Lot will close reopening the morning of July 5

SE 2 Street and SE 1 Street will close at A1A, July 4 at 6 a.m., reopening on the morning of July 5

On July 4, from 6 – 11 p.m., the Hillsboro Boulevard Bridge and A1A, from Hillsboro Boulevard to SE 3 Street, and Ocean Way at NE 21 Avenue, will be closed to traffic

Deerfield beach Pier Cleanup

Saturday, June 16, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Help clean up the beach and under the pier at Dixie Divers annual clean-up event. They need volunteers to dive under the pier and, on land, to pull up the buckets the divers will fill with mono-filament line and lead sinkers, and to co-ordinate the surface onlookers. This is the 13th annual reef cleanup. The City of Deerfield Beach will keep records of the trash weights and different composition. Dixie Divers will be videotaping and creating a DVD for the city and county of those who participate. Registration begins from 7:30 a.m. There are only 90 free spots available in the Main Beach Parking Lot by the fire station (first come, first served). Otherwise, you can pay to park in the pier parking lot or on the street near the beach using a meter. Divers must have a C card or certification number for divers and must sign a liabilty release form before getting in the water. Bring cutting tools (for mono-filament), snips, scissors and a small rake. The dive will be 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. There is a free event T-shirt and goody bag for all volunteers (only if you pre-register online). Bring family members to help clean-up the beach and pier area too. Stay around because from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., divers will attempt to get a world record for Guinness Book of World Records for the longest underwater human chain. Their goal is 400 divers; the current record (in Italy) is 308 divers. Multi-media artist Niki Lopez uses art as a catharsis to deal with past traumas in this recent exhibition. Niki, who is known for her “What’s Your Elephant?” series, grew up in a cult and suffered sexual abuse as a child. She hopes bringing issues such as her own traumas to the forefront will help others face their own challenges. This is one aspect of her exhibition. Free. There are two options available for students 10 years to 17 years old: for the brand new divers, there is the “Open Water” program (which will be the first level certification) and for those who have already completed their Jr. Open Water/Open Water, there is the “Advanced Open Water” program (the 2nd level diving certification). Both are $599.
