Azmi Mahmoud

Law Enforcement officers from multiple jurisdictions assisted in taking an escaped inmate into custody, after he led them on a vehicular pursuit.

At approximately 2:51 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 6, officers from the Davie Police Department located Azmi Mahmoud in the area of Griffin Road and Weston Road in the Town of Davie after an alert came in from a License Plate Reader (LPR) system in Pembroke Pines. Davie police officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop when Mahmoud fled from them in a white BMW vehicle, which was stolen out of Hollywood this morning during a carjacking.

The pursuit crossed into multiple jurisdictions, eventually crossing over into Miami-Dade County. The Miami-Dade Police Department officers along with Broward Sheriff’s Office V.I.P.E.R. (Violence Intervention Proactive Enforcement Response) unit detectives joined the pursuit to capture the fleeing fugitive.

At approximately 3:14 p.m., Mahmoud attempted to travel in the wrong direction on the roadway when his vehicle was stopped by BSO V.I.P.E.R. unit detectives by initiating the P.I.T. (Precision Immobilization Technique) maneuver. The pursuit ended near Northwest 42nd Avenue and Gratigny Parkway in Miami-Dade County where Mahmoud was taken into custody without further incident.

Mahmoud will be booked at the BSO Main Jail for escape and fleeing and eluding law enforcement officers. Additional charges are expected.
