JM Family toy drive helps families

Posted on 11 January 2021 by JLusk

Associates from JM Family Enterprises and its subsidiaries banded together to spread holiday cheer, supporting children and families in need with Happy Haul-idays, a first-of-its-kind virtual toy and essential needs drive. Through the campaign, which benefited nonprofit partners in each of the company’s eight business locations, more than 1,050 items were donated and distributed to local families.

To participate in the Happy Haul-idays effort, charity partners provided wish lists of much-needed items from various online retailers. Knowing that the need was greater than ever this year, associates generously shopped and had the donations shipped directly to the nonprofit. Each organization then distributed the gifts to the families they serve.

“I felt relief,” said one emotional mother from the Dumas Wesley Community Center in Mobile, Alabama. “I didn’t have any money at the time, and I was thankful for the bed linens and everything. I was just thankful and excited. It was like a weight was lifted off my shoulders.”

Participating charities included:

 – Atlanta Ronald McDonald House
 – Jackson County Family Connection in Commerce, Georgia
 – Grand Prairie Unit of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas
 – Santa Ana Unit of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Orange Coast
 – Sulzbacher Center in Jacksonville, Florida
 – Dumas Wesley Community Center in Mobile, Alabama
 – Jim & Jan Moran Unit of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County
 – Room at the Inn in St. Louis, Missouri

“This was a great way for our associates to rally together and celebrate, even while apart, this holiday season. We are beyond appreciative of their generosity in delivering comfort and joy to children and families who need it most,” said Lisa Davis, manager of Corporate Community Impact, JM Family.

Sheriff Tony sworn in

Posted on 06 January 2021 by JLusk

Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony took the Oath of Office on Jan. 5.

He was elected in the most recent election but was originally appointed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in 2019 after he suspended former Broward Sheriff Scott Israel.

In a recent statement, Sheriff Tony said, “On Jan. 5, I will take the oath of office to continue serving as your sheriff. My swearing-in ceremony will be a much less extravagant affair than those of sheriffs’ past due to COVID-19 restrictions.  Perhaps an intimate setting is more appropriate, regardless. The oath of office is a sacred trust. It is a promise I make to myself and my fellow first responders. It is also a promise I make to you.

“I recently removed the placard with my name on it from the front of my office door. I replaced it with a more suitable designation: “The People’s Office.” The sheriff and all the men and women of the Broward Sheriff’s Office work for you and our mission every day, to provide this county with the best public safety services in the country.

“When I assumed command of BSO nearly two years ago, I did so with the promise of putting public safety before all else. In just a short time, we’ve made significant progress in achieving our goals. Better training, better equipment and the introduction of new technologies mean Broward County is safer today.

“I have also worked with command staff and community leaders to create a more transparent and accountable sheriff’s office while providing public safety all residents can trust.

“I’ve appointed new members to the BSO Professional Standards Committee, including members from the community, to review internal disciplinary matters. I have established a Use of Force Review Board, the first ever in BSO’s history. I’ve made it clear time and again, I will never tolerate egregious use of force under my leadership.

“Our Social Justice Task Force recently met for the first time. The group, comprised of BSO employees, community stakeholders, organizers and leaders, will build relationships, gain trust and bridge the gap with the communities we serve. The task force will meet every other month to listen, learn and cooperate toward the shared goal of a safer, collaborative community.

“While we have achieved success, we can and will continue to do better. I will spend my next four years in office the same as my first two, working in the best interest of the people I serve.

“This year, I am establishing the BSO Office of Inspector General (OIG). The department will ensure BSO runs in the most efficient, economical and responsible way possible. The OIG will ensure misconduct allegations made against employees are thoroughly investigated, identify ways BSO can be more cost-efficient in all areas of operation and conduct independent reviews of every department within BSO to ensure we exceed public safety standards. This is just one more way BSO will be accountable and transparent.

“As we enter a new year, I want to say thank you. Thank you for entrusting me with the responsibility to lead BSO into the future. Thank you because this is your office as much as it is mine. Together, we will continue our great work and focus on taking the necessary steps toward keeping public safety a priority.”

UPDATE: Escaped Inmate caught

Posted on 06 January 2021 by JLusk

Azmi Mahmoud

Law Enforcement officers from multiple jurisdictions assisted in taking an escaped inmate into custody, after he led them on a vehicular pursuit.

At approximately 2:51 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 6, officers from the Davie Police Department located Azmi Mahmoud in the area of Griffin Road and Weston Road in the Town of Davie after an alert came in from a License Plate Reader (LPR) system in Pembroke Pines. Davie police officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop when Mahmoud fled from them in a white BMW vehicle, which was stolen out of Hollywood this morning during a carjacking.

The pursuit crossed into multiple jurisdictions, eventually crossing over into Miami-Dade County. The Miami-Dade Police Department officers along with Broward Sheriff’s Office V.I.P.E.R. (Violence Intervention Proactive Enforcement Response) unit detectives joined the pursuit to capture the fleeing fugitive.

At approximately 3:14 p.m., Mahmoud attempted to travel in the wrong direction on the roadway when his vehicle was stopped by BSO V.I.P.E.R. unit detectives by initiating the P.I.T. (Precision Immobilization Technique) maneuver. The pursuit ended near Northwest 42nd Avenue and Gratigny Parkway in Miami-Dade County where Mahmoud was taken into custody without further incident.

Mahmoud will be booked at the BSO Main Jail for escape and fleeing and eluding law enforcement officers. Additional charges are expected.
