Oceans234 unveils plan for remodeling

Posted on 25 June 2015 by LeslieM

society062515By Rachel Galvin

After their first step of launching the sale of their engraved brick pavers on June 11, which will wind along from the front of the restaurant to the beach, Oceans234 held another event to unveil the rest of the plans for a million dollar renovation that will take place in August.

The renovations, by A.W. Rosse & Associates, will take place over 8 weeks. On June 23, Media was invited to see renderings of the new look and try samples of some of their new flavors. They will have a new logo and the interior and exterior will be completely revamped, including the bar area.

They are not adding to their square footage, said owner Danielle Rosse, but being more efficient in their use of space. The indoor will extend onto the patio, a perfect locale for private occasions, seating 40 people.

The fresh new look is accompanied by new flavors. For starters, you will be able to try fried calamari, chicken lettuce wraps, seared pork belly, crab cake or more. “Land and Sea” will offer plenty of entrée options from grilled bronzino, tuna or Mahi Mahi to filet mignon, skirt steak, free range chicken or even Lobster mac and cheese.

Rather grab a sandwich? You can try a burger or get more exotic with a dolphin sandwich or blackened snapper reuben. They will have plenty of salad selections, like Thai Chicken, Poached Pear or Shrimp and Crab salad, and many sushi options too.

There will be a “Renovation Unveiling” for the general public at a happy hour Friday, June 26 at 5 to 7 p.m. at the restaurant. There are plenty of events summer-long as well.

Brick pavers, which can be engraved with name or logo, benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County, Deerfield Chamber of Commerce and Broward Health Foundation’s KIDS Campaign. They are still for sale online or at the restaurant. Their goal is to raise $50,000 and they have already raised $18,000.

Foodies flock to Boca Bacchanal 2023

Posted on 06 May 2023 by JLusk

By Rachel Galvin

Foodies flocked to The Addison on Saturday, April 30, for the annual Boca Bacchanal Grand Tasting. The stormy skies went away and attendees were able to roam in the courtyard and throughout the different rooms where everything was happening. This was the place to be. There was plenty of wine to sip from such vintners and distributors as ZD Wines, Silver Oak, Twomey Cellars, Domaine Carneros, DAOU, St. Supéry Estate, Coppola, Hahn, Hope Family Wine, Luca Bosio and many more. Guests could pair their wine with delicious samples of culinary delights provided by some of the area’s hottest restaurants, including The Addison, as well as Ramen Lab Eatery, Oceans 234, Gourmetphile, Bazille, Max’s Grille, Capital Grille, AlleyCat, Big in Japan, Atlantic Grille at The Seagate Hotel & Spa, Lemongrass Asian Bistro, Sicilian Oven, Poke Company, Blis Foods and KakaoZON Ecuadorian Chocolate.

In addition, there was a silent auction with plenty of high-end luxury items for guests to bid upon, including The Macallan James Bond 60th Anniversary Release Decade I, a Holland American Cruise for two and much more.

The Grand Tasting followed the Vintner Dinners that happened the night before. There also were seminars to teach guests more about wine and whiskey, by ZD Wines and Macallan Distillery, respectively. Boca Bacchanal was kicked off by a private hangar party called Bacchus Beckons.

Guests enjoyed mingling by the Banyan trees outside while reveling in food and drink. The Five Star Diamond Award-winning event venue has a unique charm. It was built by famed architect Addison Mizner in 1926.

The event, which is in its 20th year, benefits the Boca Raton Historical Society and The Schmidt Boca Raton History Museum. For more information, visit www.bocahistory.org.

Community comes together during COVID-19 outbreak

Posted on 29 March 2020 by JLusk

By Rachel Galvin

COVID-19 has brought our world to a standstill it seems. Business are closing. Employees are out of work. Everyone is glued to their TVs waiting for the latest news and home hoping to not get sick, or that someone they know doesn’t get sick. They are isolating in hopes that they do not spread it to others if they are the ones who have it. We are all in this together. But during this crisis, people still need basic needs – food, water, toilet paper, some of which are in short supply these days as people hoard the goods as quickly as they hit the shelves. Luckily, some members of the community have stepped up to lend a helping hand, and, at the same time, have worked to keep their own businesses going in a new way, and be able to still pay their employees during this difficult time.

The staff at Olympia Flame are now delivering items from their community market. Photo provided by Danielle Rosse.

One of those clever business owners is Danielle Rosse of Oceans 234. Her restaurant is usually bustling with people as it right on the beach. But now that the beach is closed and restaurants have been limited to take-out only, she had to shift gears to keep her business going. She came up with an idea that not only would help with that, but also help out the community. She turned her seaside locale into a community market that delivers.

We have turned our restaurant into a community market offering grocery essentials for pick-up or delivery. I saw that grocery stores were empty with food and supplies, and knew that I had instant access through my suppliers. I wanted to find a way to provide value to our community and also be able to keep some jobs. We are charging $10 for delivery. The delivery charge as well as any tips collected are being collected to support our non-working team members,” said Rosse.

Some of the staff at Olympia Flame are still on-hand to serve customers for pick-up and take-out.

She is not the only business owner able to stay open at this time. Olympia Flame Diner has been busy offering take-out. This family owned business has been open since 1991. Their full menu is available but  during reduced hours. They are open from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Owner Patty Miranda said, “We’re all trying to navigate this new normal while trying to help our community. I have been keeping in touch with other local restaurant peers. We are trying to comfort each other.”

Bia and Rafael at Casa Maya are some of the staff available to fulfil take out and pick up orders. They also have closed alcohol available shown on the table).

Meanwhile, The Cove Shopping Center seems pretty empty, but there are still a few places open, including Casa Maya, which is offering take-out from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. during the week and noon to 9:30 p.m. on the weekend. Not only do they offer up their menu items, but also packaged alcohol. In addition, they are now offering delivery.

While the Wyndham Resort is closed, General manager Claude Dubois says that their Burger Craze restaurant is still open for pick up, as well as take-out via Uber Eats and Grub Hub. Orders can be placed at 954-596-5949. The Cafe’ Med and Patio Bar, however, are closed.

“Needless to say that very sadly this situation is affecting everyone in Deerfield Beach and the beautiful country that we live in. We want this situation to be under control as soon as possible so we can have our team members come back to work as soon as possible and do what we do best, taking care of our wonderful guests,” said Dubois, who added, “We remain very positive that it will be over soon and we are taking advantage of this opportunity to make the property look even better than it has and on enhancing our services for when we reopen.”

These are only a few of the many restaurants still open for take-out. If you know of others, please contact The Observer and let us know and we will put the word out on our Facebook. Email us at observereditor@comcast.net

Stay safe!

JA World Uncorked

Posted on 26 January 2019 by LeslieM

By Rachel Galvin

Within the JA World Huizenga Center at the Lillian S. Wells Pavilion in Coconut Creek, something was stirring Saturday night, Jan. 19. It was JA World Uncorked, presented by Breakthru Beverage, and the place was abuzz with people sampling tasty tidbits and spirits to their hearts’ content.

Joe Lorusso, who was busy pouring Barritt’s Ginger Beer and Angostura Lemon Lime & Bitters, said, “I have been here five years. I like supporting the event and letting people sample our brands. We [North American Beverage Company] have ‘wow brands.’ People taste them and say ‘wow.’ I was at a food and wine festival in Key Largo this morning and am here now.”

Dayne Moore, a Sous Chef for Delaware North, which does, among other things, food service and catering, cooked up a Mediterranean Octopus Salad, Tamarind Glazed Chicken Tenders and Beef Carpaccio Balsalmico.

“This is my second year here. It is a good cause, and amazing night out with great food,” he said.

For Temptations Catering, this is their first year. Their executive chef, Ari Bellan, served up shrimp ceviche, but also made a s‘more with an eatable chocolate spoon topped with a cooked-just- right marshmallow. Yum!

“I am excited to be a part of it,” said Catering & Events Manager Lauri Dworkin.

Speaking of chocolate, Hoffman’s Chocolates were there, as always, serving up chocolate covered pretzels, chocolate caramels and a popular coconut cashew crunch. Sam Strouse and Kira Humbert had fun manning the table.

Deerfield Beach’s Oceans 234 was there this year with jerked sea scallops and short rib tacos.

“I absolutely love it. The mission that is Junior Achievement is amazing,” said Shanine Dorta, Director of Marketing.

She added that Oceans 234 has a big Valentine’s Day event coming up.

She explained, “It is a four-course picnic dinner on the sand. You get a blanket, lantern, [tote bag] — two appetizers, two salads, two entrees, two desserts and a bottle of wine. We bring the food to you. Tickets are $195/couple. It is from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Pre-order by Feb. 10. Visit website at www.oceans234.com or call 954-428-2539.

Where NYY Steak was carving racks of lamb, Tim Hogans, executive board member for Junior Achievement, could be found.

He said of the event, “It is a fabulous event that gets better every year.”

He noted that the champagne lounge, sponsored by Bluegreen Vacations, was a little different this year. It had oysters on the half shell, as well as a three piece band.

In addition, there was an outdoor component this year complete with food trucks and more beverages, as well as cornhole and Jenga, to enjoy in the lounge beneath the moon. The weather was ideal.

Of course, as always, they had plenty of silent auction items to bid on and people could put on props and get their photos taken by Fotoboyz. They also had a virtual reality experience this year, sponsored by JM Lexus, where people could put on the headset and it looked like they were walking a plank miles up over a city landscape. Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino sponsored the live entertainment in the main room.

JA World Uncorked is the Circle of Wise Women’s signature culinary event. To find out more about this annual event and all the wonderful programs it supports, visit www.jasouthflorida.org.

RE: Straw laws are coming

Dear Editor,

Florida has the most coastline in the Continental United States and coastal communities like Deerfield Beach have had enough of the damage single-use plastics have done to their beaches. Local attempts to ban plastic bags and styrofoam have been preempted by state laws fueled by lobbyists for the plastics and chemical industries, but Deerfield Beach is now set to rid the city of plastic straws with a strict ordinance prohibiting them.

I have been spearheading a march to get restaurants and hotels on Deerfield Beach Barrier Island to switch to “Paper Straws By Request Only” by distributing over 32,000 paper straws to them to try. Many businesses like Oceans 234, Whale’s Rib, Embassy Suites and Bru’s Room have made the switch. But most restaurants and hotels have not, so we really need this ordinance to pass. Plastic straws are one of the more common forms of litter found on the beach and in the ocean, taking hundreds of years to break down and causing harm to wildlife. I think we often get a straw in our drink when we don’t need it, and there are alternatives for those who need a straw, such as paper straws, which are available for about a penny more than plastic.

There are already exemptions in this ordinance for anyone with a disability and that people with compromised motor skills will always have a caretaker to ensure that they have what they need to consume beverages safely.

It just makes sense” said Whale’s Rib General Manager, Rick Mongston,“We have made the switch to paper straws upon request and are now looking into replacing other single use styrofoam and plastics…”

The Deerfield Beach Straw Ordinance is scheduled for its second reading and final vote on the same night as the Hallendale Beach plastic straw ordinance Monday, Sept.17 with other Broward County cities now drafting similar ordinances.
