Dec. 11: The owner of World Tool and Supply reported that a customer who purchased tools used a fraudulent check to make the purchase. The business owner reported that a fraudulent check for $91,960 was placed in the business account.

Dec. 11: A man reported that someone broke into his car parked at 2301 W. Sample Rd. and stole a wallet with various credit cards.

Dec. 11: A man reported that someone stole his Chrysler convertible. The incident was reported at 3774 NE 3 Ave.

Dec. 11: It was reported that a man stole 24 beers from Marathon Gas Station at 4517 N. Dixie Hwy.

Nov. 19: A man was observed coming up to the door of a home at 720 NE 43 Ct. and stealing several power tools.

Nov. 20: Two men were observed stealing packages of beer for a total loss of $76 from a 7-11 at 900 SW 10 St.

Nov. 20: A man reported that two GPS devices valued at $10,000 each were stolen from a boat parked at 14 Terr.

Nov. 20: It was reported that a refrigerator valued at $2,000 was stolen from a building under construction by Lennar Homes at 1111 Veleiros Blvd.

Nov. 20: The regional manager for the European Wax Center said that beginning on Oct. 8, an employee stole $3,869 worth of goods and services and diverted the funds for personal use. The incident was reported at 282 S. Federal Hwy.

Nov. 14: The victim met with police at 2700 NE 36 St. where she said she was unsure where she lost her driver’s license. It was later found by a public works employee at Frank McDonough Park.

Nov. 16: Police responded to an audible alarm at 3150 N. Federal Hwy. A search of the building found an open door to the front of the business. There were no signs of criminal activity.

Nov. 18: The victim met with police at 2849 NE 26 Ave. regarding a fraudulent transaction on his credit card in the amount of $7,000. He disputed the charge in September and it was removed in October only for the amount to be re-charged in November. He was told he needed to file a police report.

Nov. 2: Police responded to an alarm call at 4101 NE 27 Terr. Police checked the doors, windows and everything was found secure.

Nov. 3: The victim said he was taking a transit bus at 3600 N. Federal Hwy. and went to pay for a fare for his fiancée. When he returned to his seat, he noticed that someone had stolen his backpack containing a wallet, ID card and social security card. The total loss was $50.

Nov. 4: Police responded to an alarm call at 3010 NE 44 St. The point of entry was the office door. When police arrived, the exterior was inspected and all was found secure.

Nov. 5: It was reported that four men stole a Ford F-150 vehicle from 1630 NW 49 St. The loss was estimated at $50,000.

Nov. 5: It was reported that a man who worked for Zager Global, Inc. stole copper valued at about $300 and a cord cutter valued at about $400. The incident was reported at 149 SE 4 St.

Nov. 6: A man reported his bicycle stolen from 1300 W. Hillsboro Blvd.

Nov. 6: A man reported that his home at 327 NE 45 Pl. was entered while he and his family slept. An iPad and cell phone were stolen.

Nov. 6: A man reported that 73,000 gallons worth of water was stolen from his home at 1214 SE 12 Terr. for a loss of about $328.

Oct. 24: Police responded to an alarm call at 2821 NE 47 St. It was determined that it was an accidental trip by the homeowner to let a painter in.

Nov. 1: A resident found $250 in cash in a store at 3700 N. Federal Hwy. It was placed into property.

Nov. 1: Police responded to an interior alarm call at 4420 NE 24 Terr. The property was found to be secure.

Oct. 15: Police responded to a call of an alarm sounding for three minutes at 2700 NE 46 St. It was determined that it was an accidental trip by the housekeeper.

Oct. 18: A black purse was discovered near a dumpster at 2002 NE 36 St. It was brought to the lobby of the police department and placed into inventory.

Oct. 18: A large dead alligator carcass was found floating west in the waterway from 2540 NE 48Ct. It was pushed to the middle of the canal so that it would float out with the tide.

This is the time of year when many churches and other non-profits search for ideas to motivate their members to supply the resources they need to reach out and bring sustenance and comfort to the people they serve. My own search for ideas often leads to folk tales, such as one with the title Stone Soup. I’m sure you are wondering what a story with such a strange title can have to do with fund-raising – stick with me a few moments and I’ll try to make some sense of it for you.
The story concerns a weary traveler who sought food and comfort at a tiny village. He stopped at each of the homes along the main street, “Can you spare some food and lodging for a tired and hungry traveler?” Each of the villagers replied, “We are sorry, but we had a meager harvest and have barely enough food and blankets for our families. We don’t know how we will make it through the winter.” The traveler was discouraged and sat down under a tree in the village square. He felt his own hunger but also felt for the needs of the villagers.
Suddenly the traveler remembered the beautiful stone he had picked up along the way and put into his pocket. He gathered the villagers around him, “My friends, what you see in my hand is a beautiful stone that will feed you now and throughout the winter; with this stone you can make stone soup.” The villagers were unconvinced but banded together and brought a huge iron kettle to the traveler. They were astonished when he filled it with water and placed it over a roaring fire and gently immersed the stone into the boiling water.
The traveler sipped the brew, “Stone soup is better with a little bit of salt and pepper.” Several children ran and got salt and pepper. The traveler sipped again, “This stone makes a wonderful soup, but it would taste better if we had a few carrots.” One of the villagers spoke up, “I have some carrots I’m willing to share,” and his daughter ran and got them. “What about the cabbages I have in my pantry,” a woman asked, “would they help?” The traveler replied, “Yes, they would indeed!” The woman went home and quickly returned with the cabbages. The villagers spoke among themselves; they went to their homes and brought back potatoes, onions, barley, beef, and soon a wonderful aroma of stone soup hung over the village square.
The villagers set out tables in the square and brought large soup bowls, crusty bread and apple cider, enough for everyone. After they eat their fill, their talents for singing, dancing, and fiddle-playing was on display long into the evening. On the morrow, they gathered to bid good-bye to the traveler. A small child embraced him and whispered. “Don’t forget your magic stone.” The traveler replied, “I am leaving the stone with you. Why? because it not only fed you yesterday, and will feed you tomorrow, but it has shown you what is possible when you work together and share what you have.” With that he rode off and the villagers agreed the stone had accomplished everything the traveler had promised.
So . . what is the connection between making stone soup and having a successful stewardship drive? The answer is obvious. Both events only succeed when the participants are willing to pitch-in with their “treasure, time, and talents.” When that happens, the magic of the stone provides nourishment and comfort for all.

The Deerfield Beach Chamber of Commerce’s “You Had Me at Aloha” Happy Hour event held at the Hampton Inn on Sept. 26 was a fun occasion, a way to let off some steam after a day of work. People hung out by the pool and listened to the musical stylings of D. Marion & Company, featuring Ms. Carolyn Dudley. They ate some tropical treats and had some chilly cocktails. They had a chance to talk to their fellow chamber members.

Sept. 17: A man said his car parked at 1311 SW 5 Ave. was entered and his wallet was stolen.

Sept. 17: The manager of a Publix at 3740 W. Hillsboro Blvd. reported that a man attempted to steal  a bag with $114 worth of items. The man attempted to hit the manager and then dropped the bag and fled.

Sept. 17: A woman reported that her vehicle was stolen. The vehicle was later recovered but she declined to press charges. The incident was reported at 203 NW 46 Ct.

Sept. 17: A woman reported that her iPhone was stolen from her purse at 3812 W. Hillsboro Blvd.

Sept. 18: A woman reported that her vehicle parked at 660 W. Hillsboro Blvd. was entered and a laptop stolen.

Sept. 18: Police responded to an alarm at 2850 N. Federal Hwy. The keyholder was contacted and advised that pressure cleaners were onsite and had just finished up.

Sept. 21: A lanyard with a key fob was found at 3098 NE 52St. The property was placed into a locker.

Sept. 21: Police responded to an alarm at 2411 NE 33 St. The resident said he had a new alarm system and didn’t realize it was set when he opened the garage.
