Dunn’s Run 2011, results

Posted on 02 October 2011 by JLusk

–By Rachel Galvin —

On Oct. 2, Dunn’s Run15th Annual Race kicked off from Deerfield Beach and back with thousands of participants, running or walking toward the finish line. Proceeds benefit Boys & Girls Clubs of America. The race has raised about $3 million for the organization through the years. Not only was this early morning (7:30 a.m.) race an opportunity for people to show their competitive spirit and beat their personal best, but also was a way to show support for the community. Many arrived to walk or run with their teams or individually. Some walked with their children or pushed them in strollers while enjoying the sunrise and the beautiful beach view. Congressman Allen West came all the way from Washington D.C. to partake in his tradition of running with the American flag through the streets of Deerfield. Even CRA director Keven Klopp came out to run for the first time this year.

Then there were the competitors, like Brian Dillard, who won the 5k in the men’s division, and Rachel Ginsberg, who won in the female division. The Deerfield Beach High Cross Country team had many runners compete this year and place. Awards were given for various age categories. For more results, visit www.splitsecondtiming.com.

In addition to all the running and walking, there was also much mingling and browsing through vendor booths. Panera bread came out to serve up some good eats and the band Atlas Shrugged performed.

Letters to the Editor

RE: Taxes

Dear Editor:

With times being so hard financially, everybody is cutting back where they can. Recently, looking at my cell phone bill, I noticed a $4.59 charge that says “Deerfield Beach City – Comm Service Tax. In last week’s Observer, the mayor said we should know our facts. I would like to know where that money goes. Let’s stop the taxing. We just can’t afford it. Period!

Steven J. Fabrizio

Deerfield Beach

RE: Utility Tax

Dear Editor:

“I find it ironic … The people who are paying the least are the ones screaming the loudest.”

Have you thought, commissioner, that these people paying the least because they are using the least is because they cannot afford to use more? And now, more $$ on their bills that they probably cannot pay?

I don’t see how that is hard to understand. My A/C is set at 82. I guess now I will have to set it at 84? And water? It costs over $80 a month to water correctly. I haven’t done that since Deerfield Beach raised the water rates. Talk about flushing money down the drain!

Plans by the owner of Florida House in Deerfield after purchasing the property at 504 S Federal of opening a 24 bed detox facility are apparently dead after city manager Burgess Hanson uncovered a technicality in zoning regulations. The neighborhood was totally against the idea and did not want it that close to residential homes. Read full story in the Observer Oct 6.

Deerfield Beach utility tax opponents short 1,306 Signatures for referendum

Posted on 26 September 2011 by JLusk

DEERFIELD BEACH – Opponents of the city’s recently enacted utility tax thought they had more than enough petition signatures to force a referendum on the tax, but not enough were certified

The Broward County Supervisor of Elections Office said more than half of the signatures are  invalid.

Monday that only 2,894 of the 6,200 signatures submitted met the city’s requirements. The petitioners needed roughly 4,200 valid signatures to force the referendum, based on city charter rules.

“This petition was unique in that the city code required that it be the signature, the address and the precinct number,” Cooney said. “A lot of precinct numbers were either missing or incorrect.”

Rescind Unfair Taxes, the opposition group led by former Mayor Jean Robb and businessman Steve Krevoy, only have until Thursday to submit a valid petition.
