Trio Busted for Residential Rip-Off, Oct. 5

Posted on 26 October 2011 by LeslieM

Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives have caught three criminals who burglarized two homes Oct. 5 as the homeowners slept in their beds.

Two of the suspects were caught on video concealing their faces and spray painting the lens of a surveillance camera on the patio of a Deerfield Beach home. Then they slipped inside and stole $30,000 dollars in jewelry, electronics, checks, and other property. Detectives believe the teens possibly intended to steal the family Corvette but the dog scared them away before they could take it. Detectives recovered some of the stolen property, but they have yet to find Barbara Rysavy’s wedding ring. Earlier in the night, they crept into a Tamarac woman’s home as she slept, and stole a computer and a 2008 BMW. They drove the car to the Deerfield Beach burglary and later abandoned it.

The burglars, Brianna Anderson, David Nicholas and a 17-year-old suspect have been charged with multiple counts including burglary, grand theft, grand theft auto and criminal mischief. The 17-year-old was also charged with violation of probation. After the burglaries, detectives got a crucial clue when Anderson tried to cash checks stolen from the homeowners. She was charged with two counts of uttering a forged check.

Anyone with additional information about these suspects, the location of the missing wedding ring or the other unsolved burglaries can contact Det. Scott Nida at at (954) 480-4316, Det. Mike Colantuno at (954) 720-2225 or report information anonymously to Crime Stoppers of Broward County at (954) 493-TIPS (8477) or online at www.browardcrimestoppers.org.

New laws threaten coast, fish

Dear Editor:

Are you aware that the Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission [FWCC] is proposing to change the rules on the harvest of Spotted Sea Trout?  [New rules would expand the season and double the catch limit]. If passed, the new “law” could possibly be the demise of the Spotted Sea Trout here in Florida.

Commercial saltwater fishing impacts Florida’s economy with over $1 billion annually and over 10,000 jobs. The numbers, both recreational and commercial, add up to one huge chunk of change for Florida annually and that, my friend, is a wonderful thing. But ask yourself, “Am I willing to put at risk the extermination of such a wonder fishery so that a chosen few can gain some quick cash in place of an industry that supports Florida with $5 billion in revenue every year? Am I willing to jeopardize one of the state’s largest tourism magnets and chance the destruction of some of the world’s most wonderful marine nurseries and estuaries so that a chosen few can make some quick cash? Is changing the rules worth the risk?”

Remember what happened to the Redfish stock in the 1980s due to commercial fishing over-harvesting? Redfish in the state of Florida were all but wiped out, and it took many years to bring the Redfish population back to healthy stock levels. Billions of dollars were lost and the fishing tackle industry took a monstrous hit. Not to mention the unknown amount of money spent on getting the stock back to present-day levels.

As recreational anglers, it is in our best interest to do everything we can to see that the rules are not changed in order to ensure the future of the Spotted Sea Trout Fishery. I strongly urge you to write the FWCC today and voice your opinion regarding this matter of great importance.

DEERFIELD BEACH TO PAINT THE TOWN PINK

Posted on 07 October 2011 by LeslieM

Pink fire engines and pink patrol cars will be the center of attention as they parade through Deerfield Beach this Sunday for the Broward Sheriff’s Office Pink Heals Tour 2011, raising awareness and funds for cancer charities.

The Pink Heals Tour was first brought to Broward County in 2010 by firefighters from then-Deerfield Beach Fire Rescue (now, proudly part of the Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue family). In continuing this tradition, BSFR, the International Association of Firefighters Local 4321 and the city of Deerfield Beach have planned a day-long, family fun event that, in addition to the parade, includes free entertainment, health screenings, food for purchase by local vendors and a survivor celebration.

Riding in the parade will be Sheriff Al Lamberti, along with BIG 105.9’s Paul Castronovo and his wife Gina, a cancer survivor, and Deerfield Beach elected officials. The parade will depart Quiet Waters Park at 11:30 a.m. and proceed north on Powerline Road, east on Hillsboro Boulevard and travel along the beach to the main beach parking lot located in front of BSFR Station 75 at South Ocean Way and Southeast First Street. Opening ceremonies are scheduled for 12:30 p.m. followed by a fire truck pull, Police Athletic League boxing match from 1 – 3 p.m. (tickets for the match are $15 to benefit the Children’s Cancer Caring Center) and a free concert from entertainer Amber Leigh at 2 p.m. Luminaries on the beach honoring cancer survivors and victims at 7 p.m. will close the event.

There will also be fire rescue and law enforcement equipment displays and demonstrations, a car show, kids play area with bounce house and other family-oriented events.  For more information on the Pink Heals Tour 2011, visit www.pinkhealsdb.com or www.pinkfiretrucks.org.
